System Information
Operating system: macOS-10.15.7-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-07-14 22:44, hash: blender/blender@0e9367fc29

Short description of error
In this section of the user manual:

Regions => Vertical/Horizontal Split
There is a piece of text describing the area splitting function:

Vertical/Horizontal Split
Shows an indicator line that lets you select the area and position where to split. Tab switches between vertical/horizontal.

This is no longer matching with the actual UI display. What you see on the UI is a plus sign icon (+) appear and you will have to drag that plus cursor inside - for vertical split, or down/up for horizontal split.

Please update the documentation to match the UI behaviour

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open Blender
  • Put mouse pointer at the corner of the area until you see a plus icon (split cursor) appears.
  • Press and hold left mouse button and drag towards inside of the area for vertical splitting, or up/down for horizontal splitting

Nice catch! Screenshots on this page and many others need to be updated.

Maintaining documentation is a community effort. Would you be up for updating these images? Something similar to what's already there but with the latest UI in 3.3 Beta would be enough I think. Perhaps using a higher resolution scale in the preferences.

You can also drop by #docs to discuss.

Thanks!

I would not mind doing it if I have time. At the moment, I'm translating a huge amount of text to Vietnamese. I choose to ignore ones that no longer matches the UI but other than that I'm translating texts that do, and also reading up on changes as well. In short, I cannot as I have no time left. Thank you for asking.

I need to know which section of the current 3.3 manual still working as designed and documented, so I can continue the translation. Can someone in charge with the Documentation informing us translators please?

This is a hard question to answer because the manual is not updated chapter by chapter.

You can see a list of changes still pending here: #98243

I think the part about area splitting is in fact still correct. It's just a bit confusing because there two ways of doing it:

For the status bar, the documentation already says to use RMB to choose the information to display, so I'm not sure what's wrong there.

I think the part about area splitting is in fact still correct. It's just a bit confusing because there two ways of doing it: - The one you quoted from the "Regions" page of the manual, which is triggered from the area header's context menu. This still applies to 3.3. - The one you described yourself, where you start dragging with LMB from the corner of an area. This method is described on the "Areas" page: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/interface/window_system/areas.html#splitting For the status bar, the documentation already says to use RMB to choose the information to display, so I'm not sure what's wrong there.

I think the part that created confusion for me is :

Shows an indicator line

I was looking for an indicator line which doesn't appear. Instead, I see the cross icon (+) . Next is the text should mention the fact that one need to drag the mouse "inside" for vertical split, and "up/down" for horizontal split.

The indicator line appears when you use the context menu. That's also what that part of the documentation is about.

The (+) cursor is documented separately on the "Areas" page.

Matthew, you're so correct. I tried the context menu again and it worked exactly the way it is described. I did not see this before. Thank you for commenting and guidance.
