System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.15

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-31 17:40, hash: cc66d1020c
Broken: 3.4
Broken: 2.90
Worked: 2.83.20

Caused by deaff945d0

Short description of error
If I add a Surface Deform modifier to a mesh and assign a vertex group to the modifier, the Edit Mode viewport display will ignore this vertex group and display the mesh with all vertices affected.
While not in Edit Mode the mesh will display correctly in the viewport. Not an urgent bug, but would be helpful to have this fixed.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Select the default cube and change to Edit Mode.
  2. Select a single face, add a vertex group, and assign this face to that vertex group.
  3. Change to Object Mode and duplicate the cube.
  4. Add the Surface Deform modifier to the original cube.
  5. Set the second cube as the Target and the single face as the Vertex Group.
  6. Bind the Target to the default cube.
  7. Change to Edit Mode with the Target cube selected and scale it up by any amount.
  8. Change back to Object Mode and hide the Target cube. The default cube is displayed correctly with only one face scaled up.
  9. Change to Edit Mode with the default cube selected and enable the display of the Surface Deform modifier in Edit Mode. The viewport will show the entire cube scaled up.
