Short description of error

Working on a large scene,
Dragging the Playhead in the timeline editor is extremely slow, as well as the playback.(5-sec move one frame ). If I choose the drop keyframe options, it will skip too many frames. Dragging objects and changing view in the viewport seems ok. I guess there might be too many animations playing at the same time. Is there a way to isolate the animations and only play/ edit the one I selected?

Thanks for the report. Does this happen in recent builds?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily
Many factors can affect the performance, memory, CPU, geometry, shading mode, etc. While we do continue to work on improving performance in general, potential performance improvements are not handled as bug reports.
To improve performance, consider using less complex geometry, simpler shaders and smaller textures.
