System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 526.98

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.4.0, branch: blender-v3.4-release, commit date: 2022-12-06 18:46, hash: a95bf1ac01
Worked: 3.3.0

Short description of error
If I render some items saved in 3.3 as "Shade Smooth", they render as Flat in 3.4.0 and can "take coaxing" to Shade Smooth again.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Use the attached file kettle 32 saved 2.blend
  • open and render in version 3.3.0, see kettle_32.jpg
  • open and render in version 3.4.0, see kettle_33.jpg
  • attempt to Shade Smooth and render: might still shade Flat.

Hi, thanks for the report. I can confirm this in 3.4 and succeeding versions. Though node tree is bit complex. Could you simplify it a bit?
Also some nodes are undefined in provided file

@mod_moder, switch to viewport rendering and select cycles render engine :)

i replaced the Combine node with a defined combine node (why was it not "defined"?). It made no difference to the render

@jamestomk hi, thanks for the update. I think difference is due to Normal map node. This is just a guess though. Could you simplify the file further? It's really hard to detect the problem with large and hierarchy of nodes

problem: I am using a Material from "Material Library VX" and so am unfamiliar with it. I'll report a bug there and link to this one.

This probably also implies that other users will run into a similar problem.

I submitted a bug report against the add-on in case they want to comment on this report.
