This has been an issue for a while now. For most of my projects, it is just a minor annoyance not having this feature. But for the kind of stuff I'm doing again now, where I need to replace a ton of generically named imported materials/textures for a porting project and need to be able to visually identify them quickly so I can replace them with the correct material, it's so painful and slow without this. So just wanted to chime in with my hopes this gets fixed sooner rather than later and really this should be considered being moved out of an add-on and made a vanilla feature in Blender so it can be properly maintained if this add-on is basically abandonware at this point.

Fixed for Blender 3.5. In main (future 3.6 release) it also now shows in the context menu.

if this add-on is basically abandonware at this point.

A bit of a stretch to call it abandonware considering this issue was never assigned to the add-on maintainer (me).

It's also a good idea to look at the date on which issues are published, this issue for example was on December 26th, which is a holiday/vacation time in many countries that can lead to missed notifications. In cases like this a simple poke and mention to the add-on developers (or on #blender-coders) always helps.
