System Information
Operating system: macOS-10.15.7-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.5.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-12-19 20:56, hash: c2a8d8b18d

Short description of error
See this test file for details of setup

20230110_learning_grease_length_modifier_with_vertex_weight_inverse_weight_thickness_factor_on_blank_0001.blend

As you can see in the following test captured image, parts that are WHITE, have not been weight painted, ASSUMED 0, but apparently Blender does not consider it to be so, Inverse the Thickness Factor shown different interpretations about the EMPTY status of vertices.

Screenshot 2023-01-10 at 20.12.28.png

When not INVERSE, this is what you have got:
Screenshot 2023-01-10 at 20.18.08.png

So what is the DEFAULT WEIGHT for the blank, not painted vertices?

Hi, thanks for the report. Which Inverse option you're talking about?

That toggle is not to inverse the effect. It changes the stroke thickness based on vertex weight value (thickness between 0-1)
Not a bug as far as I understand.

So empty lines are considered to have some weights? Where does it say so in the documentation?

blue color indicates 0 weight value. So that area is expected to be empty

Exactly but the blue areas are shrinking to appear having no weight at all, while the red areas having similar thickness to those that are empty, what is the logic here?

see red color vertices has correct thickness of ~1 while blue area has ~0.
I'm not sure what you mean by "red areas having similar thickness to those that are empty"

What weight would the question marked areas have? I have not allocated any weight for those areas. By the way, would you be able to help provide me a link to the file which created this image (https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/3.5/_images/grease-pencil_modifiers_generate_line-art_transparency-mask.png). I needed to learn how this image was created. Been struggling to understand. Thank you.

Default weight value for the vertices in question marked area is also 1.
This is because you've assigned vertices in vertex group with weight value=1

No idea about the file. That image doesn't look related to this report.

Can we close this report?
