Instanced objects as hair particles not visible in Particle edit mode #28431

%%%Painting instanced objects or groups as hair particles is a valuable feature in decorating landscapes. Blender 2.49 allowed the user to see the actual instanced objects while in the Particle mode, which includes the Add, Comb, etc. tools.
The recent and current Blender versions only display the edit strands of painted objects, and the user is unable to see the orientation, size or selection (from an object group) of the instanced objects. Getting this feature back into Blender would be very helpful.
The attached blend has a number of instanced objects, painted as hair. The beginning value for the surface mesh's particle system was set to zero, and the particles were added in particle mode. Please note that these instanced (or added new) objects can only be seen once the user switches back to Object mode. The attached .blend was saved in Particle mode. It will initially show the instanced objects, but they immediately disappear when you begin to edit in more particles.
** another possible bug is that the full brush menu does not appear (especially the 'Add' brush) until the 'Emission' value is played with, in and out of Particle mode, when the .blend file is first setup. Please reply if this is, indeed, an issue and needs to be submitted as a new bug.

System: i7 -920 12Gb memory
Windows 7 or Ubuntu
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
problem exists in Blender 2.59 (build 39307) and other earlier 2.5x versions%%%

%%%I can confirm both issues on Ubuntu 10.04 and Blender 2.59.2 r40018
For the second issue: The full menu in the "Tool Shelf" appears too when moving the mouse cursor over the "Tool Shelf".%%%

%%%I just tried a Graphicall build (by alb3530) r40335, which included the particles 2010 branch. This build has the same bug.%%%

%%%i know a dirty fix could make the right solution come even later, but maybe giving the possibility to display a box instead of a line would allow to paint from top view and see where it is already filled with particles. For grass/forest, it's sometime hard to see how dense you painted and that back and forth to fill holes is really time consuming.%%%
