%%%With a video output format (MPEG, AVI JPEG, etc.) selected in the Output panel of the Render properties (using Blender Internal render), adding a File Output node to the compositing node editor immediately crashes Blender.

This is under Windows 7 64-bit, running the 32-bit build of Blender. Graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M. The message I get from Windows is:

Choosing a single-image output format like PNG allows me to add a File Output node safely.

Attached is my default .blend file - to reproduce, simply add a File Output node to the compositing node editor.

Let me know if I can help with any other info.%%%

%%%Fixed in SVN, thanks for reporting!

The file output node only supports actual image types (no movies), which it needs to verify on creation (it copies render settings as default). This also means you can only output individual frames when using the compositor, but this is the recommended workflow anyway: create an image sequence, then make them into a movie file using an external tool.%%%
