face with double normals after applying a mirror modifier #32398

%%%open sample file and apply the modifier.
In edit mode you can see that the face seems to have two normals.

  • explanation * - the mirror modifier is duplicating the face, but the face is in the intersection between the mirroring axis. That makes the applied mesh to have one face but two normals.%%%

%%%This isnt a bug, all faces get duplicated with the mirror modifier, you could consider this simply a limitation with how the mirror modifier works, but even if this was possible it would have to be optional since sometimes you want overlapping faces since modifiers applied on top of this - such as subsurf- can make them not overlap.%%%

%%%Hi Campbell, the problem is not while the modifier is on, but after it's applied.
It is creating two faces that share the same vertices (so I can't remove double them to get rid of one of the faces).
Is this the design?

Now, the first file I sent actually works correct/bugfree (after applying the modifier if I 'remove doubles' it works).
So I think the problem may be some backward compatibility problem (bmesh?).

Attached you can see a face from a stripped down production file (created with Blender 2.56, but opened and saved with trunk).
The doubenormals_2.blend has only one face but please try to apply the modifier and 'remove doubles'. It doesn't work. The only way I found to remove the extra face was to select one face and 'remove only faces'.%%%

%%%aah - 2 faces sharing same verts should be avoided. re-opening.%%%
