SSS Bugs and weirdness #36620

Render differences between the two integrators, and bugs in SSS.

- Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) ---

Hi Brecht,
please see the attached file "SSS_bug.blend" and the attached images. (Mesh from http://www.cggallery.com/)

Note that the file includes a Environment texture (jpg), which seems to be a part of the whole problem.
Also "Compatible" seems fine.

  1. Press F12 and render with both integrators. Compare. See "integrator_difference.jpg. Both rendered with 20AA Samples.
  • Color is different, this is still there with more samples.
  1. See attached "sss_nose.jpg" This has been rendered with 200 AA Samples (Sub Samples were all set to 1).
  • Weird artefacts in the nose with Path Trace.
  • I would expect Branched Path Trace to have less/equal noise levels with same amount of AA Samples.
  • For Branched Path, I also rendered with 400 AA Samples then, and it looks exactly! the same as with 200 samples.
  1. Disable/Remove the Environment Texture and render again. This looks comparable. (See "without_env_tex.jpg). Rendered with 200 AA samples.
    Note that the weird artefacts in the noise (also in other places) are gone, at least I cannot see them here anymore.

Sorry for the long list, but I hope it helps to track down the issue.
