Particles set as objects cast wrong ray shadows in BI #48799

System Information
Intel Core i7, 8 Gb RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7700
Windows 7 x64

Blender Version
Broken: 2.77 950c2ea
Worked: 2.77a abf6f08

Short description of error
Particles set as objects cast ray shadows with artifacts in BI.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender, add a simple plane and add a particle system to it.
  2. Set start and end frames to 1 so all particles will spawn right away and number of particles to 10 or other small number.
  3. Set particle Render to Object and add a default Cube as an object, set its Size big enough so cubes will cast visible shadows.
  4. Set any lamp that can create Ray Shadows and rotate it to make cubes cast shadow.
  5. Render your scene.
  • In 2.77a ray shadows will work as expected.
  • In latest build shadows will be at the wrong places and there will be many lighting artifacts.

Just in case: here is how it looks in 2.77a and latest 2.77. You can use my test file - just open it and hit render.shadow_bug_1.png

I have made some additional tests to find a temporary workaround and found out some other issues:

  • Shadows change if you uncheck "Instances" option under the "Acceleration structure" in Properties -> Render -> Performance
  • Shadows change if you rotate an object that is used for duplication (which is a Cube in my example file)
  • Shadows change if you set "Acceleration structure" to Octree

I have also found a very strange phenomenon: billboards with transparent texture are rendering with shadows turned upside-down! Changing acceleration structures doesn't seem to affect it and same thing happens when I use objects with transparent textures so this becomes a real problem for me. I also don't know if this is a separate issue or not. Here is an example:Upsidedown_shadows.png Particle_object_artifacts1.blend
