System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3770

Blender Version
Broken: 2.8, 8c87af7440, 2019-02-06
Worked: 2.79

Short description of error
When trying to add a new particle system to an object with a particle instance modifier, the particles are only emitted from one of the instances, as opposed to all of them. This occurs even when "Use Modifier Stack" is enabled.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • With the default cube selected, give it a new particle system.

  • Add a mesh (preferably a sphere) and give it a Particle Instance modifier, selecting the default cube and its particle system in the "Object" and "Particle System" areas, respectively, and disabling "Unborn" and "Dead" (preferably enable "Size").

  • Give this new mesh a particle system, and, in the "Source" settings, enable "Use Modifier Stack".

I followed your steps and created the scene in 2.79 but to me it seems like it works the same as in 2.8:
part_inst_test.blend

Are you using the latest 2.79 version? https://builder.blender.org/download/

My apologies. I forgot to include the fact that "unborn" and "Dead" need to be disabled in the Particle Instance modifier. I have tested this with the newest version of 2.79 and it seems to be working just as fine as the previous versions. In the recent builds of 2.8, however, it doesn't work properly.

I've updated my test file with the new instructions and can confirm that the results are different

Attaching file which can be actually used to compare behavior between 2.79 and current 2.8: part_inst_test.blend

@Iago-Diogo-de-Vasconcelos-Mota, please always attach a simple .blend file, as requested in the bug report guidelines. This saves a lot of time of everyone.

I don't know if anybody is ever gonna read this as the task has been marked resolved. I'm writing nonetheless as I believe it is not resolved in 2.81a.

Here is what was possible in 2.79 and isn't anymore in 2.81a: https://youtu.be/BhjK-6t9Gqs?t=460 (see the result of the scene in the first 5 seconds of the video).
The .blend file uploaded by Sergey Sharybin shows the difference to older versions as the particles emitted by the cube don't emit particles themselves which they do in the youtube video.

ParticleVertexArrayProblem.blend

I am having a similar problem in 2.82, cannot instance particles using emit or hair from a mesh that doesn't have faces, even when emitting from verts. This is only a problem when I am also using an array modifier.

See modifier stack and particle system in attached file.

Yes I have toggled "use modifier stack", and yes I have put the particle modifier at the bottom of the stack.
