Flying Man.blend

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 PRO
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M

Blender Version
Broken: v2.83.0

Short description of error
The Graph Editor doesn't show any curve of the selected Armature, in Pose mode, whatever Bone selection is made.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open the provided .blend
  2. Select and deselect bones (using Box / Lasso / Circle in the 3D view)
Notice that no curves are displayed in the Graph Editor (bottom pane), whatever the Bones's selection, which is NOT expected.
  3. Click twice the "Only Show Selected" button (in Graph Editor, 1st button on left of the buttons in the upper right corner of the pane).
  4. Select and deselect bones
Notice that now curves are displayed accordingly to the selection, as expected.

The Only Show Selected state seems to be broken, until we un-activate then reactivate it.

Hold on, are you using the Box Select tool?
(can repro with that tool)

If so, this does not set the Armature itself active automatically (which seems to cause this?), so its name in the Outliner needs to be bright orange.
I think in 2.83, you could enter posemode by clicking on the Armature icon in the Outliner, in 2.91 you cannot do this anymore.
If you click on the Armature object in the Outliner, does box select then work for you?

Yes indeed, I'm entering the Pose Mode by directly clicking the Pose item in the outliner (which is a nice shortcut rather than selecting Armature then Ctrl+Tab).
But as you found, the Armature is not highlighted then, and the Graph Editor is not responding to selection.
I have the same behavior when using the Select Box, Select Circle or Select Lasso tools or the A shortcut (Select/Unselect All).
I confirm that the highlight of the Armature is the reason why the Graph Editor respond or not to Bones selection change.

  1. Select and deselect bones

When I do this in the 3D viewport things work exactly as expected, so the "steps to reproduce" don't really convey what to do & how to do it.

When I select a pose bone in the Outliner, the curves still show up properly. However, when I then {key Shift Click} another pose bone in the outliner (so then there is one active+selected and another one just selected) the curves disappear from view. Disabling & enabling "Selected Only" doesn't help here, so that least that's working consistently. However, when I select a bone in the 3D Viewport, or simply change which of the selected bones is the active one (also in the 3D Viewport), the curves are shown again.

This was in the title "(if in Pose mode, but armature unselected, with box/circle/lasso tools)"
Updated the reports steps to reproduce, please check this with Box / Lasso / Circle (this fails for me because the armature is not selected)

I did some digging, and it turns out that, even though the armature object is in pose mode and marked as active, it's not selected. This causes the pose animation to be hidden when enabling the "Selected Only" filter. This means that there is a simple workaround: go to object mode, select the armature object, and enter pose mode again. Now all the selection methods work fine again.

an other reason to fix the "active but not selected"/"selected but nothing is active" bad behaviour across all blender.

That was also in the title: "if in Pose mode, but armature unselected" and one comment above "this fails for me because the armature is not selected"

Yeah, it is bad... I think in this case it was the Outliner fault: but clicking on pose icon wont do that anymore - which is good, there might be other ways to still do it though...

Question is if code should consider status of selected bones in the "Selected Only" filter regardless ob object selection state? If we know we can have unselected objects yet selected bones, why do we consider the selection state of objects?
But this could very well be a Known Issue (especially since it is less likely to run into this situation now that the Outliner wont let you do this)

When objects are in pose mode, users will expect selected bones to be treated as "selected", as these bones will be operated on in the 3D view (can be transformed, keyframed ... etc).

Similar to UV editing, when in edit-mode an object doesn't have to be selected for it's selected geometry to show up in the UV editor.

Even though in both cases the object is typically selected, it doesn't have to be.

This patch only applies object selection in object-mode D12494: Fix #81922: Pose bones don't show in the graph editor when it's object isn't selected.
