System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 950M/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 452.06

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-25 08:34, hash: 0f45cab862
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
[When trying to apply Array Modifier for Bezier Curves, I get a notification that it has failed. I need them to be separated and stay as curves without having to make them into a Mesh]

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Create curve, Add depth to its bevel under Geaometry tab in Data properties. Now create an array using a modifier and try click apply.]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

I can reproduce this, but I think this is a limitation, not a bug. @rjg any thoughts on this?

The error message accurately states the following:

Transform curve to mesh in order to apply constructive modifiers

Applying constructive modifiers on curves without converting to mesh first, isn't supported in 2.91 and, to the best of my knowledge, never was in past Blender versions. As such this is a missing feature or technical limitation and not a bug. The array modifier is also not for creating separate objects, it's creating one object that consist of the multiple mesh copies merged into one.

If you don't want to convert between mesh and curve in order to keep the properties of the Bezier curve, I would suggest the following:

  • Use a plane as placeholder object and add the array modifier to it.
  • Create the curve in the desired shape.
  • Select the plane and in Object Properties > Instancing enable Faces.
  • Select the curve, then the plane and use {key Ctrl P} > Object to parent to curve to the plane. You should now see instances of the curve on all planes.

Use Object > Apply > Make Instances Real to convert the instances into real, separate curves.
