System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 461.40

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.2, branch: master, commit date: 2021-01-19 16:15, hash: 5be9ef4177
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Videos outputted with encoding container MPEG-4
Are rejected by youtube
image.png
Matroska however, isn't rejected

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the untitled.blend file
  • Drop the attached video file at correct location and make sure file -> external data -> report missing files shows nothing.
  • Render menu -> render animation
  • Upload the video on youtube.

*I first updated to the latest release of blender (https:*www.blender.org/download/)
Opened my old .blend file and had these problems//

I created a brand new .blend file test.blend
Imported a video
Rendered it with these settings:
Format: FFmpeg
Container: MPEG-4
VCodec: H.264
ACodec: AAC
Then uploaded it to YT

Videos kept getting rejected, I used different videos as well
Yet the videos that I rendered from the older version of blender I had just before updating (2.90.1) processed on YT just fine
So it wasn't a server problem with YT
Finally switched container to Matroska and Youtube accepted videos rendered in Blender 2.91.2
For longer videos however, Matroska isn't as compact as MPEG-4 so this is a problem

Does this happen with videos of any size? Or just big ones?

Please share one of those .mp4 (preferably a small one) that gets rejected.

Actually, they are short videos about 10-30 seconds long
I've been rendering them out in/since blender 2.90.1 and they work just fine
I still have that version of blender installed, I'll see if I can render n upload it from there

I gave 2.91.2 a try again thinking a PC restart might do something
no good

Rendering it in 2.91.1 processed almost immediately after upload, like normal
(ones in 2.91.2 would take a while before it finally started processing and then reject shortly after)

I'm not comfortable sharing my videos as they are not published under my name on YT yet, but here is the metadata of the video in those screenshots

It's not some weird format, just a regular mp4
I also know that the resolutions are inverted in the .blend, which is intended

I don't know if this is only for short videos
I'll have to render>upload a longer (+10min) one in 2.91.2 to see if it also affects those

As for the part where I mentioned longer videos
I use Blender for editing longer videos as well and would prefer not to have them rendered in mkv
Since I usually don't delete anything for awhile
I still have 2.90.1 in case longer videos also get rejected

Blender comes with its own FFmpeg encoder, right?
Did it receive any changes?

I doubt this is the problem, but I downloaded the newest FFmpeg to then use with Power Sequencer addon
However, I also kept the older version of FFmpeg that I had and reverted to it when I thought this was the problem
Eventually disabling the addon still didn't fix the issue
That's when I then tried mkv format as a workaround

Hey uhh, just to make sure
2.91.2 is the newest stable download right (not LTS ofc)
It's the first thing that showed up on the front page of the website
It's not an experimental or daily build right??

And since I'm here asking about it, is there some way to get a notification when there is a new update?
I get that auto-updates are a nono, but I didn't even know there was an update till now lol

Uh oh.. I thought I'd mess around with something that I very strongly doubted was the problem

But I inverted the resolutions again - so now it looks normal - and the damn video processed!
(the one called wide)
[this was done in 2.91.2]
image.png

That doesn't change the fact that it does however accepts videos with the inverted resolution from Blender 2.90.1
(I tested the exact same video it's rejecting in 2.91.2 and it was accepted)
[It's the one called 'Old' in the screenshot]

This kind of changes things, I don't like it. But I can get around this
My longer videos, as long as they don't have inverted res, can stay as mp4
My shorter (or more accurately; inverted) ones will have to be Matroska from now on I guess

I went ahead and recorded a few seconds of just a black screen and reattempted to render and upload it to YouTube in mp4 (exact same settings)
Here you should have everything you've requested

SS of it getting denied

Recently updated to Blender Ver 2.93.0
And YouTube still rejects portrait videos from it, unlike 2.91.0 and before
image.png

Guess I'll keep using Mkv :/

Sorry for late response, Noticed this report just now since it wasn't tagged with sequencer tag. In any case, I was able to reproduce in old version and not in recent or LTS versions, so will close this report.
