Curve deform with shape keys buggy

Add a curve, path or bezier, scale it and rotate it 90 degrees. Apply the transformations. Add a sphere. Create a shape key of it unchanged, then stretch it out along X and make another shape key.

Add a curve modifier to the sphere and bind it to the curve. Fail!

Now do it again but don't scale or rotate the the curve. It works.

My workaround after hours of experimenting is to rather change the size and orientation of the curve by moving and rotating the control points.

I'm confused by the steps to reproduce the problem. Could you provide the simple file by showing it?

Sorry about the delay in responding. DeadlinesFollow_Curve_Problem.blend. This gives a rough idea of what I was wanting to do. Imagine a bunch of these radiating out like a fountain from a central point. I tried a number of ways to make it so that I could vary the lengths and shapes of the curves too. With one curve un-rotated and in one plane I can do what I wanted. But duplicating it and modifying it proved impossible. To get the job finished by deadline I had to superimpose an animated 2D version I made in Photoshop.

It seems to me this should be possible. Maybe it's me not knowing enough yet?

Thank you for responding to my query.

It is still not clear to me what the intended behavior is here.

Could you provide more info? screenshots might help here.
So what we need to know is exact reproduction steps, something like this: "sausage 1 is working as intended, suasage 2 is still working as intended as long as XXX is not done, but as soon as XXX is done, the behavior is unexpected in that XXX" .
