1-2s lag when using scroll wheel button to orbit #89142

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 466.11

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-06-02 11:21, hash: 84da05a8b8

Short description of error
1-2s lag when using scroll wheel button to orbit

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. hold mouse scroll wheel to start orbiting
  2. 1-2s lag/freeze occurs before it starts orbiting
  3. if you hold on viewport gizmo (the colorful XYZ thingy in top right corner of viewport), it orbits with 0 delay

Video demo: https://files.catbox.moe/yp0mq0.mp4
First, I orbit with viewport gizmo (you can see when I'm holding mouse click, cursor disappears - orbit start lag is 0, then I start orbiting with scroll wheel button - you can see delay between mouse cursor movement (I try to hold scroll wheel and move at the same time) and viewport orbiting (around 1-2 seconds).

If Volume Scatter is disconnected in World shader, scroll wheel click lag doesn't occur. So it seems that issue is related to volumetric and inconsistency how it reacts to scroll wheel button vs viewport gizmo orbiting, despite them doing the same function.

I think this bug was occurring also in 2.91 and 2.92 (I noticed this bug around end of 2020)

Thanks for the report. I can notice a little lag with blender-v2.93-release branch build.

Try disabling add-ons on broken version if some extra add-ons are checked and see if that helps.

If issue happens on multiple device then possibly it's related to the system. In that case upgrading the OS or driver may fix the issue

Please also add the system info file generated from the help menu: Help -> Save System Info

Found the culprit via trials/errors:

It's Depth option in Orbit & Pan settings. If I disable it, the lag is gone. For some reason, when it's enabled, orbiting introduces 1-2s initial lag when using mouse scroll wheel click, but not when using the gizmo in viewport top-right corner. I believe it requires investigating in blender code (I've disabled all addons, didn't help until I found Depth option).

@tonpix , thanks for clarifying. In that case the issue is similar to: #73827 which was merged in #68206 (Lag reading viewport depth buffer in LookDev mode)
