Background flickers and UI redraws #92884

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 456.55

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2021-10-27 22:07, hash: b838eaf2b9
Worked: Probably broken since pre-2.8 era

Short description of error
Background flickers, specially noticeable with gradient backgrounds
When moving around and moving the cursor the background changes very slightly,

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Problem seems related to nvidia card
https://twitter.com/XdanielArt/status/1457016311012380678

But might also explain or be related with the UI flicker with the m1 chip
https://twitter.com/YanSculpts/status/1457012189257207811

A workaround (at least for the background flicker) is using full screen mode (Window > Full Screen)

In your tweet you say

Oddly enough, the screen recorder doesn't capture it, so here's the recorded directly with my phone

This suggests a display issue, not an issue with Blender. A possible cause for this is Freesync or G-Sync. When you move the viewport in Blender the frame rate can change a lot. If you have a low quality Freesync or G-Sync display with the setting enabled, this fluctuating frame rate can appear as a noticeable flicker. However with higher quality displays with Freesync or G-Sync enabled, the flicker becomes more subtle to a point where it may not be noticeable.

I'm not sure if you're using one of these displays, but if you are try turning off Freesync or G-Sync and see if that does anything.

Notes:

  1. The issue reported by YanSculpts is probably very different to your issue and should be reported as separate bugs.
  2. I could not notice any flicker in the video you posted that definitively looked like the display flickering. There was some "flickering" in the video, but it came from the pixel grid of the display causing aliasing/Moiré that was not temporally consistent on the video.

I use the laptop screen so there's nothing to configure, There's no freesync or gsync setting in the nVidia graphics panel either.
I can set it to use the integrated graphics in the windows settings and the flicker is not there anymore.

Here's another recording, hopefully a bit more clear this time, notice how the banding "contracts/expands".

I can see it better in the new video, however I can not reproduce this issue on my system with my monitor. So I believe someone else should triage this report and see if they can reproduce it. See if it's a software issue or a hardware anomaly.

Hi, could you please try the following:

{nav Edit > Preferences > Themes > 3D Viewport > Theme Space (way at the bottom) > Gradient Colors > Background Type > set to Single Color}

Jesse suggested this in #93696.

Damm, issue is not gone, but has been there for years and getting reported again and again, and changing to single color does not solve the issue here's a more recent report btw #104128

Hi, this can be closed if #104128 is identical. Changing background color from viewport shading tab fixed the problem for you?
