Set Material Node does not reuse existing empty slot #93455

Short description of error
If I set material with Set material node, it will not appear after remesh modifier.
No matter if i set material to initial instance or to final geometry after Realize node.

Hi, thanks for the report. I can confirm. Materials are not applied to the geometry with Remesh modifier
I am not sure if this is a bug or developers expect this behavior.
Issue like this was also reported previously: #93607 (Remesh Modifier loses reference from Set Material in Geometry Nodes.)

I don't know if it's helping, but on the "user" side of things a quick workaround seems to be adding a second geometry node after the remesh to set the material.2022-03-18 20-08-30.mp4

Until we can distinguish a mesh that uses the default material from a mesh with no materials, I don't think there's a good way to fix this that doesn't compromise performance in many cases.
#95967 will implement that as part of moving mat_nr to a generic integer attribute.
