Crash of Blender while using Image texture node with image sequence #94813

System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Apple M1 Max Apple 4.1 Metal - 76.3

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-02 18:35, hash: f1cca30557
Worked: 3.1.0

Short description of error
Blender crashes when animating a texture with the image texture node and an image sequence.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Extract Connect-2040-vid.zip
  • Open .blend file
  • Import image sequence from extracted file
  • hit spacebar to start animation off and view results in the 'shading'-tab in Material Preview mode.
  • around frame 500 blender crashes.

Actions taken:

  • Intel-version of B3.0 downloaded and installed; same result, crash at about 500 frames.
  • File loaded into B2.93. Got a warning about "made in newer version" but started it off anyway, worked perfect, no crash.
  • All not necessary objects and meshes thrown out to make file less heavy; same results, crashes.
  • Image Node set up in 'single image': no crashes. After setting it back to image sequence: crash.
  • Image node set up in 'Movie' and loaded the original MP4-movie: crash at about 500 frames.
  • Mapping node disconnected from image texture node: no difference, crash.
  • Blender 3.0.1-RC downloaded and installed: crash.
  • Blender 3.1 Alpha downloaden and installed: NO crash (!?)

Hi, thanks for the report. Can you upload .blend file as well.
Also, make sure to pack resources in your file then save it: {nav File > External Data > Pack Resources}

Hi Pratik,
For some reason I wasn't able to pack the blenderfile with the JPG-files, so I have uploaded both. Blender refused to pack the JPG's with the command you gave me. The uploaded files are: "Md-31_FS_TechVloer V06-Buggy-V02.blend" and "Connect-2040-vid.zip"; the latter holds 9500 JPG's from the original MP4-movie, extracted via the Blender Video Editor.

Additional info: the number of 500 frames before crashing seems to be a constant. when I start animation from, for example, frame 300, the crash appears at about frame 800.

Thanks in advance for your attention for this problem.

Thank you Willem. Other file (Connect-2040-vid.zip) is missing. Can you also upload that file?

Remarkable, I added that file too. Weel, second try.Connect-2040-vid.zip

I gave it several tries to upload (the zip is 476 MB) but it I don't see it in this log. I have tried to load up the original folder (751 MB) which was refused. Is there another way to get the file to you?

Thanks, still unable to get the crash on both 3.0.0 and 3.1.0
Someone on Mac need to check this (I've seen some recent crash reports on Apple M1. Probably its one of them?)

Please attach crash logs: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#crash-log

Are you able to get the crash with factory preferences?: {nav Edit > Preferences > Save & Load (3 horizontal lines) > Load Factory preferences}
image.png

Blender 3.0.1-RC downloaded and installed: crash.
Blender 3.1 Alpha downloaden and installed: NO crash (!?)

Thanks for testing

Hi Pratik,

  • I load this files up: The MacOS-Error-report, the Blender crash-report and a screen video of the crash as it happens.
  • setting Blender to the factory settings made no difference, crash after about 500 frames.Blender-2022-01-16-150453.ips

This is probably a duplicate of #92740 (based on the crashing stack trace above) which was already fixed for 3.1 and then again for 3.0.1 as of January 12th.

Indeed looks like a duplicate. Thanks @deadpin :)
Willem, can you please check again on recent 3.0.1 build?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Hi Pratik & Jesse,

YooHoo! Problem solved, everything works fine now. FYI: I used "Blender 3.0.1 - Release Candidate January 17, 02-00-02 - aafbd74646 - dmg - 172.93MB", Apple silicon version for the test. In my first series of tests I used an RC from 11 januari, just one day before the fixed version came out....

Anyway, thanks for your fast response. Happy again!

best regards,
Willem
