System Information
Operating system: Windows 11
Graphics card: 6900 XT

Blender Version
3.0.1 but I also tried 2.93.7 with the same results

Broken: This is my first install of the software
Worked: N/A

Blender starts. If I click on Open file there is a good chance it will crash.

If the open dialog comes up then:

  • If I click Cancel it crashes.
  • If I open a directory it crashes
  • If I open a file it crashes.

Hi, thanks for the report.
Crash occurred in atio6axx.dll which is AMD OpenGL driver
Upgrading your graphics driver will likely to fix the crash: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/troubleshooting/gpu/windows/amd.html
Also, I can not reproduce with your provided steps

Operating system : Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card : AMD Radeon(TM) 535 ATI Technologies .```

Thanks for the quick reply Pratik,

I've already updated the AMD driver. It says I'm up to date.
I also made sure windows update says I'm caught up.
The issue still happens.

Hi, can you provide system info file?: {nav Help > Save System Info} (same file will also generate after the crash)
Did you update your GPU driver from device manager? (It always show drivers are latest)

Now it's saying ntdll.dll

Not very sure what causing the crash. Do you have this issue with other softwares or just Blender?
Try repairing the file if it's corrupted: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files-79aa86cb-ca52-166a-92a3-966e85d4094e

I'd updated the GPU driver from the Radeon Software Suite.
I did try the corrupt file repair. It did find something but the CBS.log's info doesn't really seem to be a relevant file that was repaired.

However, this didn't address the problem either.

This issue also seems to manifest in other ways as well. Sometimes I open Blender and I get flashing a white overlay on the main window and the file menu is transparent over the background when I open it. Although usually I click Open->Cancel to reproduce the crash issue. Also Opening files sometimes does it. Exporting files sometimes does it. I had to try 3 times to get the system-info.txt you'd requested.

I'm also experiencing a problem with Cura however that seems to be a python stack corruption and no other software on the system is crashing. I've tested GPU intensive games, crypto mining, Visual Studio, VPN software, VR. None of these seem to have a problem running. I'm not convinced that the cura issue is related yet but I'm not ruling it out either.system-info.txt

I believe I've found a solution:

Uninstalled AMD Software Suite

Uninstalled Graphics Driver Via Device Manager

Windows Initially replaced graphics driver in device manager with Generic Windows Driver but AMD 6900 XT was automatically reinstalled.
Driver Version in Device Manager shows 30.0.13023.1012 10/18/2021

Now Cura and Blender no longer exhibit issues mentioned before

Now I Reinstalled radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-22.1.2-win10-win11-64bit-jan25
Recommended reinstall of Version 22.1.2. (Shows 30.0.14023.3004 1/18/2022 in device manager)
Checked Factory Reset as well

All problems have gone away now.

I just wanted to add that after some time the issue returned. I don't believe my graphics drivers are set to auto update but I followed my original solution of uninstalling the graphics driver from the device manager (Display Adapters->AMD Raedon RX 6900 XT) and rebooting. Note I did not click the box to remove the driver. Only uninstall.

NOTE: After reboot I did not update the driver again through the Raedon software.

This fixed the problem again. Although note that Device manager still shows (Display Adapters->AMD Raedon RX 6900 XT) so I'm not sure what the Uninstall actually did but now the issue isn't occurring for the time being.

I'm not sure what triggers this behavior but the above seems to be a temporary workaround. The issue always reoccurs. Luckily I only use blender as an occasional hobby and there are other computers running Cura in the house.
