Short description of error
Going into edit mode makes the texture no longer appear.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open Blender
Add a new UV checker Image texture or local image texture.
Go into solid view, texture mode.
Texture will deappear and only shows grey mesh.2022-02-03 21-05-02.mp4

also happens in 3.2 alpha I forgot to mention.
It would at least be very helpful to have input from the draw manager team. I can not immediately see what is it wrong on the draw manager side, and I can not force textures to appear by forcing UV layer to present. Either it is an issue in the drawing code which is outside of my area, or I need to know what is it exactly is missing/expected from the depsgraph.

Also just check on my Laptop that has Linux on it (Intel CPU/GPU) and has the same issue, 3.0 works fine.
Where it fails is that
mloopuv
isn't available on the mesh. Workbench degrades the drawing back to material color drawing.This happens in
workbench_color_type_get

Thanks for the investigation!
The longer term proper solution is to make all areas of Blender aware of mesh wrapper. That requires some public API which will take care of specifics of data access though.
For this bugfix I'm proposing D14013.
