System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 471.41

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-08 18:16, hash: c77597cd0e

Short description of error
Face selection mode overlays in vertex paint mode produce drawing glitches when gpu subdivision is enabled.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Make sure {nav Preferences -> Viewport -> Subdivision -> GPU Subdivision} is enabled
  • Create Suzanne
  • Add Subdiv Modifier
  • Go to Vertex Paint Mode
  • Enable Face Selection Mode
  • Select Some Faces
  • If nothing weird happens zoom in and switch back and forth between vertex and face selection mode

this is how the error looks for every tested setup
randomly chaning when switching on and off face selection mode

Only happens if GPU subdivision is enabled
Also tested on following gpus all on Windows 10:
GTX 980, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, RTX2070 Super, RTX 2080

Enzio,

 Nice catch! I'm running into the same issue with a simple character I was creating and turning off GPU subdivision resolved the issue. If I didn't have any materials on my object, it seemed okay. I only saw the issue in edit mode. Object mode looked fine.
 This happened on both my laptop and desktop. Both systems are running Kubuntu 20.04. Desktop has an AMD Threadripper and nvidia 3090. Laptop is a Dell XPS with an Intel i7 and an AMD Vega integrated graphics.

Edit:
Not sure if it'll help, but I'm attaching my model. In object mode it looks fine.

Simply hopping into edit mode shows the issue with the materials.

If you grab a couple of the vertexes right in the middle of the belly and move them around you should see the splines.

Turning off GPU subdivision seems to resolve both immediately.

Hi, thanks for the report. Can't reproduce here the exact issue you've shown.
But noticed some wires on mesh which I think are not intentional.
@kevindietrich , can you check?

@wardred I cannot reproduce your issue, but if it persists, please open a separate bug report.
