BONES WONT WEIGHT PAINT! #96474

System Information
Operating system: Ryzen 9
Graphics card: AMD radeon 5

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected) 3.1 ANDDDDDD before it was 2.79

I have under 5,300 bones for hair cards. After painting half of my skulpt in weight paint, my rig stops working and wont weight paint or select bones. they are thin basic planes that I am weight painting. not sure why it stops after a certain amount of bones.

Short description of error

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Long Hair Strands - Low Polly.blend

Here is the file. I am having issues with the entire right side in weight painting (I posed two strands where it got stuck around). as far as I know there is nothing wrong with the rig itself. I am questioning if it is a bug or a max to how many bones a rig can contain for weight paint and posing.

Circle select does work however selecting individually on the right side does not.

I can paint in your given file.
Can you check with factory preferences?: {nav Edit > Preferences > Save & Load (3 horizontal lines) > Load Factory preferences}

The sides that were not weight painted it won't let me paint at all or select the bones. This would be the right side. Half of the selected portion should move and be weight painted. the very bottom won't let me select the bone. I just did factory reset and saved on preferences and nothing happened. I am still having the issue.

I am using blender 3.1, I am using CTRL and click to select the bones but it is either selecting bones from the opposite side or not selecting the bone I am clicking on at all. The bone seems dead. Nothing I do to select it with the mouse works. it may work through selecting the bone file name or circle select but it is not working with manual selection.

Ctrl and click. I am not sure how to fix this. This happened in blender 2.79 and then when we upgraded the issue only started happening on my larger rig that I had just made. the smaller ones I was having this issue with was fixed after the upgrade.

Would there be a software limit to how many bones a rig can have? I am just trying to figure out why the right/left side of the rig does not let me weight paint.

Ps. I may have gotten right/left confused but the issue is with the front side that is not weight painted.

Hair Strand 8.023, Hair Strand 8.022 and the few strands next to it have this issue with the corelating bones in front. try weight painting the bottom bones let me know if that works?

Work around - PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!! not sure why I had to delete bones to allow weight paint to work on other bones. Though they were all connected, and were going the right direction.

Do you have problem in bone selection? Or you are not able to weight paint the selected bones?
As I said earlier, I can paint on the default selected strand from your file. Do I need to perform some extra steps to replicate the problem? If so, please mention it.
Is it possible for you to attach video recording of the issue?
