GPU memory full issues with RTX 3090 when there is plenty of memory free #98867

error1.jpg

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10, CPU with 12 cores, 32GB of RAM
Graphics card: RTX 3090, 24GB of VRAM

Blender Version
Broken: 3.1.2 Stable (also tested in the recently launched 3.2)
Worked: no one works as expected

Short description of error
Just set Render to use cycles, and blender crashes under moderate memory load

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Create a scene of moderate complexity
  • Set Render mode to cycles
  • Blender crashes when trying to render and sometimes just by going into render preview

I am monitoring GPU memory usage and it never goes above say 10GB of the 24GB that the RTX 3090 has.
So what's the explanation for this?
It keeps crashing but I see nowhere that memory is being filled, not even close

Here is a .blend fully packaged file that triggers the problem in my RTX 3090:
https://we.tl/t-0QRTNrAoFw
(its wetransfer so link is valid for a week)

to trigger the bug:

  • load the file in system with 32gb of ram and RTX 3090
  • render the scene
  • the first time it may render well
  • try a second time or a third time. Eventually blender crashes, for me typically the second time, sometimes the first time
But that's just 1 example, it happens to me with other scenes as well of less and more complexity than the one I put in that file

I can not reproduce this issue on the system setup described below. Are you able to try updating or re-installing your GPU driver and seeing if that helps in any way? https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx

Hi and thank you for replying

I have just tried the same setup on my laptop, which is:
Dell xps 15 7590
GPU 1650 with 4 GB of memory (four)
32gb of ram

and with same blender version, same all,

It does NOT crash. It will just no crash, no matter what I do,
increasing the subdivision surface modifier beyond what I had in the desktop,
It simply will never crash.

Incredible.
This means there is a clear issue related to the RTX 3090 Card

I recently updated my driver to the very latest Studio Driver of Nvidia, what else can I try?
please suggest anything you like for me to try

I have now confirmed that these crashes do not happen in my much lower specs Laptop,
and yet happen all the time on my powerful desktop with the RTX 3090

further testing

even if I deactivate CUDA in blender and set it to None in system,
I keep getting crashes on the desktop that has the RTX 3090, but no crashes on the much lower spec Laptop,

any suggestions as to what else to try?
I have now a clear path for replicating the issue on my machine

  • I create an ANT landscape, with 256x256 subdivisions
  • I apply 1 step of erosion
  • I apply a displace modifier
  • I then try to apply a subdivision surface modifier and here is where desktop always crashes and latop never crashes

so to summarize my latest findings

The scenario is this one:

  • launch version 3.1.2 (same thing happens with 3.2)
  • create an ANT Landscape, and change subdivisions X and Y to 256, change no other settings
  • then launch the Erosion tool, applying 1 step, the default
  • then create a displace modifier and apply any texture there (a 2K one)
  • and then finally, attempt to apply a subdivision surface modifier to the landscape

At that point, my laptop never crashes, but my desktop always crashes

Laptop specs that never crash:
Dell XPS 15 7590
Nvidia 1650 with 4 gigs of Vram (four)
32gb ram
windows 10

Desktop specs that always crash:
AMD Ryzen 12 cores
Nvidia RTX 3090 with 24 gigs of Vram
32gb ram
windows 10

Of course the desktop crashes in many other scenarios as well, its been crashing like crazy for days, but this one is a scenario that I can now consistently reproduce 100% of the times, crashing always on desktop, never crashing on the laptop

and as far as I know I have the latest Nvidia Studio Driver installed recently on the RTX 3090 desktop card, I am going to try to relaunch the machine in different ways and keep testing, any suggestions of things to try are super welcome, thank you very much

Blender/Cycles crashing or having errors on your 3090 but not other computer suggest there is something wrong with your computer. Some possible causes are:

  1. A corrupted install of the latest GPU drivers. Re-installing it might help.
  2. An issue with the GPU drivers that you have installed that isn't present in older drivers or the game ready drivers. Maybe try switching to the game ready drivers or try downgrading your drivers to see if it helps?
  3. An issue with you system as a whole causing issues such as an unstable overclock, or corrupted Windows install, or something like that?

Good news,
after many tests I decided to uninstall all the AddOns or basically go back to Factory Settings of the 3.1.2,
and voila, so far it looks like the performance is back and crashes have stopped (unless I do something really crazy), its not crashing with what it was crashing yesterday, which is great!

Fortunately I had written a list of the AddOns I had installed. Its obviously not possible to know which one was causing the problem, but I share the list in case it can help anybody, and it may be one of the last 2 in this list, because those last two were installed recently

  • Node wrangler
  • Easy HDRI
  • Import images as planes
  • Extra assets
  • Loop Tools
  • Bool tool
  • Cell Fracture
  • Copy attributes
  • BlenderKit
  • Add Mesh: ANT
  • Rokoko
  • Mixamo
  • Saplin tree gen
  • Shakify

of those ones, the ones that I added most recently, that may be related to the problem are: Saplin tree gen and Shakify,
those two I added recently, maybe one of those caused the problem

You could try re-enabling each add-on one by one until you experience the issue, then report to us which add-on that was.
