Asset Browser - Drag and Drop doesn't work, blocked? #99312

Operating system: Win 11 Pro
Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen) - 3.2.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-06-08 10:22, hash: e05e1e3691, type: release
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Asset Browser is showing a set of assets in an external file. When trying to drag one of the assets into 3D view cursor becomes slashed-circle and asset cannot be dropped.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Asset Library file...

The little connected drives icon in lower-left of each asset icon seems unusual but hovering over it provides no info.

Expected Behavior:

  1. The asset is dropped into the scene.
  • The action the user desires is known - they want to drop the asset on the scene. If there is a config error or permissions error an alert should be shown telling user how to resolve it.

Hi, thanks for the report. You're trying to drag nodetree asset in viewport (which is not possible)
This is not a bug. Try instancing nodetree in geometry nodes tab.

In the Blend file for these items they are attached to objects. Is it difficult to add that to the scene when dropped?

If there is some ambiguity when dropping, can't system ask whether to create whatever base (mesh, curve, etc) the node tree starts with?

Would make the experience more satisfying and help users explore geo nodes assets.
