Short description of error
I am in edit mode and I can't select any vertices nor lines or faces.
I can select vertices only using the letter "a".

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
go to edit mode and not be able to select anything or deselect anything.
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Is this happening in every blend file (also the startup one)? If not, can you add an screenshot or better an example blend file please?
