Blender is unresponsive because it has to process a huge load of objects. The dae attached adds over 6000 objects, and with the current, inefficient code that will take a (very) long time. Right now just let Blender run until it is finished. I'll mark it further as a todo to check into.

Note to any developer looking into fixing: for each object instance added a scene graph update is done. Adding 6000 objects in Blender is already slow, with the added depgrap

It appears for me that is still the same in 2017. Can someone please confirm that? In order to load large scenes, I had to write a script that breaks them down into chunks of 500 grouped objects. Then a second script appends them together to a single file. It appears that there is only one update call per group, thus it loads faster, but still not in a reasonable time for 50k objects. Joining them works even much faster, but destroys any animation information :(
