Blender crashes when I select an object (right click) #32694

%%%Hi, as I said Blender crashes on object selection.
The terminal says Core dumped segmentation error.
I remember this error already happened before (many months/years ? back).

I tried all the latest build on graphicall and my own svn build.

Only the r50890 works without problems.
The crash happens even if I only start with an empty scene, create a cube and select it...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bits
Intel core i5 3210m (ivy Bridge)
Intel HD 4000 graphics
Nvidia GTX 680m (4Go)
8Go ram%%%

%%%Can't confirm the crash here. (Windows 7 x64)

Use builder.blender.org builds please, not Graphicall ones. http://builder.blender.org/download/

Also do a File -> Load Factory Defaults first. %%%

%%%Well, that's good sign :)
Let us know if crash will re-occur (but also test with softwaregl -- intel's drivers are breaking sometimes, this annoys me too but it's difficult to work workaround from blender's side :()

For until your feedback would consider the issue is solved. Thanks for the report :)%%%

%%%Hi Sergey, I was about to ask you what is this softwaregl, I just found this script in the same folder as the blender bin.
But could you explain quickly its purpose ?

I noticed that when I use it, a selected object hilights faster than with the normal blender bin.%%%

%%%It switches blender to fully software emulated opengl mode. Meaning no default video driver or hardware acceleration is used. This helps in cases when video driver is buggy. This happens quite often on intel and amd cards. The downside is that it's slower than hardware-accelerated drivers.%%%

Hello,

Same problem with my installation.

Today I downloaded blender 2.77 from this link

Extracted it to my Home folder. Double-clicked on blender inside extracted folder.

When I selected Cube by right-clicking on it, Blender shutdown. This happened each time while selecting object.

I searched online for solution, and as told in this link , did a factory reset but of no avail.

I even deleted extracted folder, reinstalled it, but still same problem.

Below is my system configuration:

OS: Ubuntu 14.04LTS
Memory: 7.7 GiB
Processor: Intel Core i7-4700MQ @ 2.40Ghz
Graphics: Intel Haswell Mobile
OS type: 64-bit
Disk: 976 GB

From this [comment ]] of this [ https:*bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/blender/+bug/902618 | post , above mentioned problem (Blender crashed while selecting any object) was solved.

I changed the "Selection" render mode to "OpenGL Occlusion Queries" under User preferences -> System tab. Default was Auto.

I also couldn't select an object using Blender 2.77 on Ubuntu 14.04LTS without it shutting down immediately.

I tried Prashant Singh's suggestion to change User Preferences -> System -> Selection from Auto to OpenGL Occlusion Queries and that seemed to fix it (thanks Prashant!)

Same issue for me. Blender 2.77 on Ubuntu 12.04. Selecting object instantly closes the current instance of Blender.

Bah, people keep getting this bug... We got quite a few reports on this so I'm repeating myself over and over again :S
This crash was caused by a bug in Mesa package Intel drivers that has been fixed in the meanwhile. Changing selection mode isn't a real fix, just a workaround. For a proper fix, please update your mesa package.
The reason this wasn't an issue before is because it was only happening with VBOs which are used by default since 2.77.

I also added a note on this to the 2.77 release logs , but it doesn't seem like people really notice it :/

I changed the "Selection" render mode to "OpenGL Occlusion Queries" under User preferences -> System tab. Default was Auto.

This resolved my problem with freezing when the object is selected. I guess the System options came with the file I downloaded.
