Duplicates: #36393

%%%--- Operating System, Graphics card --- Win7, NVIDIA GTX 580 on homebuilt PC; and ATI Mobility Radeon HYD 5870 in ASUS G73 Laptop

- Blender version with error, and version that worked --- 2.67a

- Short description of error --- When rendering in BI or Cycles, if the Properties Shelf is OPEN, the render time is >2x longer.

(used default settings in Cycles).

- Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) --- Render any scene in BI or Cycles with the Properties Shelf open,

and closed to compare render times.

See attached file & screenshot of a different file on another computer.

Thanks,
Cal

%%%Hi Wolfgang,

it appears the problem is that 2.67a doesn't automatically close the Properties Shelf when rendering.

I tried 2.66, and the shelf closes automatically.....it will stay open if I stay in the render screen and "T" open the shelf.
And the render times are also 2x longer when the shelf is open, at least in 2.66 & 2.67a.

Can we make the shelf automatically close whatever the version?

Please let me know if I need to contact anyone else or the Wiki to make a note of it.

Thanks!
Cal =)%%%

%%%FYI, I just tried 2.68 and the problem is solved, at least the Properties Shelf closes automatically when rendering (as in 2.66).

Also I found that Blender Internal renders almost as fast with the shelf open as closed......e.g 25" open vs 24" closed.

But Cycles is 3X slower when the shelf is open. I don't know if it's considered a bug, glitch, or quirk.

Is there a way to have a popup warn the user to "Close the Properties Shelf when rendering"? Just a suggestion.

Thanks again,
Cal =)%%%

%%%The problem here is that the scopes updating is slow and it gets repeated frequently during render/compositing. Proper solution would involve making scopes updates an independent threaded job, but that's more of a ToDo than a simple bugfix. Added to our list, for now you'll just have to accept it or close the scopes panel during render/composite, sorry.%%%

%%%Hi Lukas,

just a warning pop-up to close the panel before rendering would help, and only necessary if after rendering
a frame, and without going to another screen, the Properties/Scopes panel is opened, and rendering is
started again.

If that happens, Cycles will render 3X slower......hopefully it will be apparent to the user.

And at least it already closes automatically before rendering in 2.68, and I assume it will be so in 2.69, etc.

Thanks very much,
Cal :)
