OpenGL viewport rendering to a new window fails

Description

Rendering the viewport to a new window (render properties -> display set to new window) doesn't work anymore. It freezes controls on the UV/Image editor window that pops up and it only shows a transparent background.

Blender version with error:
2.68 official, 2.68 r58487, (linux 32-bit and 64-bit, nvidia gpu)

Blender version that worked:
2.67b official (linux 32-bit and 64-bit, nvidia gpu)

Steps for others to reproduce the error:
- Open a new scene, set rendering display type to new window
- Render menu -> opengl render image (or push the corresponding button on the 3d view header)
