%%%--- Operating System, Graphics card ---
Windows 7 Home premium, Intel (im sure this is the problem)

- Blender version with error, and version that worked ---

2.63, 2.64

- Short description of error ---

when I go to file-> user preferences and click, blender stops responding. I am well aware that there is a problem with intel, and it appears that I need to use
blender-softwaregl script, and furthermore I have seen the download directory. I still cannot find this script though. was it included in the Blender download and in one of the created files for installation? Was it somewhere on the official download directory page that I missed?

- note ---

many others have had this error. Some said that switching to an Aero theme would work, but it did not for me.
it is a problem that I have read all about, and seen many issues which relate to it, but I mearly cannot find the script that I need to run.

I would greatly appreciate any help I could get with this issue.

%%%question: you use blender 2.64 (2.64a), that has this issue and blender 2.63 (2.63a) don't... is that correct?
did you tried blender 2.68a already?

i have Windows 7 64bit, i7-3770 CPU/GPU and "blender-2.64a-release-windows32.zip" and "blender-2.63a-release-windows64.zip" and works well for me.
and the most recent SVN "blender-2.68-r59506M-win64.zip" "blender-2.68-r59586M-win64.zip" as well - does not hand on user preferences on my system with intel CPU and build in intel GPU on CPU.

i know, i also had some ugly ui issues in the past with intel, but switching the "File | User Preferences | System | Window Draw Method:" to e.g. "Triple Buffer" fixed the most of the most worst issues (i know, you said, your system hangs already when you open the user preferences, but i suggest, try out a actual build of blender http://builder.blender.org/download/ )

%%%I apologize, I forgot to add 2.68. also, 2.64 did not work, 2.63 did work.

yes, I have tried 2.68a, same issue. I used the 64 bit installation packages and I am running on windows 7 64bit. I will download and try the zip archives now, and see if that changes anything.

I just downloaded the zip archive and unpacked it. I then ran the Blender 2.68 exe. When I clicked on user preferences, rather than freezing the program like the installation versions did, it simply closed the window without taking any other action.

do I need to have the expressed zip in a specific place? is it a problem that I have installed the 2.68 version from http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ ?%%%

%%%Did you try updating your graphics drivers to the latest version from the Intel website? Old versions have a known bug, and Windows does not automatically update this driver to the latest version.

The blender-softwaregl script is for Linux only as far as I know.%%%

%%%i always use the .zip version of blender - because i an one of the freaks who must have the newest of the newest... and the .zip version is the easyest one.
you can unzip it where ever you want and after then you can start it for there where you was unzipping it to.
what happens, when you rename the "%AppData%\Blender Foundation" folder (it contains all your settings and startup files).
if that folder is not there anymore, blender creates a new one with virgin settings - maybe something is problematic with your settings...%%%

%%%PS.: side by side installation of blender should be no problem%%%

%%%happened on my netbook with Atom Cpu, too, the issue was gone on win8
A simple workkaround would be to keep it in one Window (e.g. use user preferences instead of 3d view)
with the new user preferences it wont even mess up your start UI hitting save user prefs ;)%%%

%%%We've had this issue reported multiple times and each time installing the latest Intel drivers solved the issue. If that doesn't solve the issue you can reply here, but for now I will close the report as there has no been no reply and it's most likely the same known bug in the Intel driver.%%%

I accept that you cannot address every bug in every version of every display driver.
I even accept that this issue is caused by a bug in the display driver.

What I wonder is:

  • what does "File / User Preferences" do that no other aspect of Blender does that causes this driver bug to crash the app?

WORKAROUND:

  • instead of "File / User Preferences", click the "Editor Type" button in the 3D view area and select "User Preferences".

SO, what does "File / User Preferences" do that "Editor Type / User Preferences" doesn't do?

  • Jesse

PS: I have the latest drivers (2009) from Acer (manufacturer) and Intel (chipset) and the issue persists.
(: Yes, this is an old laptop: Acer Inspire 5732Z running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit :)
And I am running Blender 2.69.
