System Information
Mac OSX 10.9.1 MacBook Pro late 2011 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 16GB of DDR3 1333 MHz memory, No graphics

Blender Version
Broken: (: 2.69.0 r60991)

Sometimes when switching form solid view mode to rendered view in the view port, when there is an image texture in the scene blender will crash completely forcing me to "recover last auto save"

to get this error open blender and create an object with an image texture. About 10% of the time when you switch to rendered mode Blender will crash, particularly after duplicating objects with image texture.Bamboo.blend
Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps

I tried this a bunch of times but could not reproduce the problem on OS X 10.8.4.

Can you give exact steps or save the .blend file in such a state the all that has to be done is switching to rendered mode, or as few steps as possible? Most likely it's some kind of threading problem which is fairly random but it's also sensitive to the exact way you do this, e.g. if there is some preview render open at the same time, if the image is loaded from a file or an existing image datablock, etc.

@ThomasNzioki please open a new bug report, resurrecting a 3 years old one is not really a good idea, especially since you are not under the same OS etc. Also please fill all required data in report (we need hardware specs among other things…).

@Bastien Montagne Thanks for the response, I had installed my blender from snapd packages, I removed it and downloaded same version from the Blender website, recreated the whole file and the background image renders properly.

The file planets.blend above does not work even in my current version. I highly suspect its an issue with the blender package on snapd packages. Thanks though
