System Information
Windows 7 nvidia

Blender Version
Broken: 74216cf

Short description of error
I tried to set the text color of the vertical tabs, but the background color seems to be coupled with the text color which makes it impossible (for me) to find a convenient color setting for the vertical tabs

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • open tool shelf to see the vertical tabs
  • open user preferences (themes tab)
  • select 3D View
  • Locate "Theme Space Settings"
  • change the color value for "Region Text"

Now the text color changes. But the background color of the vertical tab space changes as well.

Thanks @GaiaClary, I'll get this resolved. I think using the Region Background as a starting point and then reducing the value slightly would be good.

Okay this is still the case in my recent commit, b3101aba6a, as the colors are interpolated. This is going to be left as is for the time being. It's not ideal, but works well for now in most cases.

Likely what needs to happen to better define the theme options available for 3D View Regions and then add/remove options as needed.

Marking this as Low Priority to address after 2.70.

Here is another study: I used an image editor to move the tab region to the other side just to see how it would look alike:

Then i enabled region overlap and made another fake image:

Now i have 2 questions:

1.) Is it easy to add alpha to the Tab background ?
2.) is it easy to move the tab section from left side to right side?

If both is easy then i propose to at least try it out and give users the ability to test the usability of the tabs depending on whether they are placed inwards (on the 3D View side) or outwards (on the window border as it is now).

And yes, i am aware it is not a clean solution, but maybe its a working solution ;)

@JonathanWilliamson another thing you might want to do is add in a mouse hover highlight to the vertical tabs. in the win64 official 62a3fe2 build the tabs are not consistent with other blender ui elements like buttons, menus etc, in that they don't become brighter when the mouse is hovering over them. this could confuse some uses who expect the highlighting to indicate a ui element can be clicked on.

As far as I can say, this is no longer the case, so think we can close this as fixed! :)
