Problem with "Normal map" node in Cycles renderer #39535

System Information
Operating system and graphics card
Linux Mint 16 KDE x86_64

Blender Version
Broken: 2.68a-2.70 (earlier versions was not tested)

Short description of error
Dark areas on object while rendering with Cycles and using "Normal Map" node.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Unwrap a model;
  2. Mirror an UV island in UV/Image editor (mirroring in both axis gives more darkness);
  3. Add "Normal map" node to "Image texture" (there's no really need to open an image);
  4. F12.

Not sure whether it's a bug or not, would leave it to @brecht to decide.

P.S. It's always a good practice to upload .blend files which demonstrates the issue just to eliminate possibility that some setting from your startup file affects on the issue and so.

With factory settings the effect is the same.

I don't understand the description, please do always at each a .blend file so we don't have to spend time guessing how you set things up.

A normal map node with an image texture node but no image doesn't make any sense to me to say it's rendering wrong, that's not supposed to do anything useful. You UV unwrap the model, then bake a normal map for it and set up the nodes. Also check the norml map node docs to set the color space right:

Here is the file. Just press F12. Take a look at the top of the cube. Change direction of the sun lamp, change type of the lamp to point... Than look at the separate square island of the UV map, mirror (Ctrl+M -> X (Y) or S -> X (Y) -> -1 - doesn't matter) it once or twice in different axis and you will see the point of the issue{F83671}.

This file does not have the image texture node set to Non-Color Data, see the manual:

AAAARRRGGGHH! Sorry for my inadvertence and wasting your time. However the same effect is in Blender Internal renderer, but less.
