System Information
Windows 8.1. hardware is asus p8z77-m system board, i7 3770k processor, 16G ram, built in intel z77 video.

Blender Version
2.70

Short description of error

Blender 2.7 startup crash when pcie audio card is installed in the pcie 2.0 16x slot instead of a pcie 2.0 1x slot

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

I tried to install an nvidea 770 card and found that I needed to remove my audio card (RME RAYDAT) because there was no room. Testing with the nvidea card went fine but I removed it for now till I get a new system board that will hold both cards.

After removing the gtx770 and uninstalling drivers I tried testing the audio card in a different slot since even with a new board it may need to be installed in a slot that is not pcie 2.0 1x. After testing that the audio worked ok with the Audio sequencing software I tried to load blender.

At this point blender crashes every time it is loaded. the contents of the blender.crash file are as follows:

Blender 2.70 (sub 0) Commit date: 2014-03-19 05:02, Hash 19e627c

that is all the file contains.

I found that if I disable the audio card in the windows device manager that blender will load and run correctly.

My guess is that when blender is scanning for a GPU and finds something else in the slot it is crashing.

Could you maybe try 2.70 msvc 2013 preview (http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.70/) as it has a different OpenAL. I think the audio is the cause of this and not the nvidia driver.

Thanks for the suggestion JuicyFruit. I was able to get both cards working by installing the gtx 770 in the Pcie 2.0 16x slot and putting the Raydat audio card back into the pcie 2.0 1x slot where is was originally.

I'm not sure how much performance I am missing out on by not having the gtx770 installed in the pcie 3.0 slot though.

I have a new system board ordered which has 2 pcie 3.0 slots so I can install in the one that does not block the pcie 2.0 1x slot that I need for the Raydat card.

@TomTuko, blender does nothing specific with the hardware directly. It's possible that some third-party library causes the issue, but it'll be out of the scope of this bug tracker.

The only thing we might suggest is to try using msvc2013 builds.

To be able to fix bugs we are to be able to redo them by ourselves and it's that sort of bug which is REALLY difficult (or even impossible) to replicate hence we can't really solve it. Taking into account it's an issue in some third party lib as well..

Thanks fr the report anyway.
