Black Spots with Cycles #40099

win7 64bit gtx titan i7

Short description of error
Not really sure if this is a bug or a bad settings. However changing bounces for any ray type has no effects.
A glossy plane with bump normals shows black spots.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Check the attached file and image. Just press F12

It's a known limitation of bump mapping. Bump mapping is a trick that works up to a point, but if you push it too far then the real geometry of the mesh is revealed and you get problems like this.

We can improve this in some ways, but for now this is not considered a bug.

@dragostanasie, an option is using sub division modifier(s) + displacement modifier:

This limitation is still in 2.75. Can we hope for some development on this topic?

I have had this problem every once a while. And it's posted on BA today, too.

hey @brecht , any image about how this happens? "how the ray bounces under a strong normal/bump, and what makes it black (low pdf, etc...", what is the possible work around "other than real geometry displacement"
