Short description of error

Smoke/fire display in viewport and density/flame attribute in cycles shader are different

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

See attached blend file to follow steps:

  • bake the smoke sim (would be really fast, sims take +/-30sec here)
  • go to frame 25
  • render
  • compare render result and viewport. Some smoke/fire miss on cycles render.

I join the screenshot of the blend too. Missing Smoke/fire is rounded with grease pencil on 3Dview.

What happens here is that you have a domain that's more than 500 units wide, while there is a rendering volume step size configured of 0.1 units. That means it will exceed the maximum 1024 volume steps, and so part of the volume will not be rendered.

You need to increase the volume steps size to see the full volume, there's no point having it so low if you use such large volume objects, it will render faster too.
