I apologize for creating this bug because I'm almost certain it has to do something with my system. But I cannot figure out what to do.

I have tried installing Blender 2.71 from the ZIP file and the installer.
But when I click on the blender.exe, the output window shows up and immediately I get the error 'Blender has stopped working'

  1. I have loaded factory settings and removed all user preferences.
  2. I made sure it's not my antivirus interfering.
  3. I downloaded the latest build from builder.blender.org

All of these did not help me.
I request you to please help me find a solution.

Windows 7 64 bit. 8gb ram. Geforce GTX 560ti.

Perhaps you might try to isolate the Blender installation using the zipped version (not the installer one) and uncompress the Blender folder on you hard drive then, before running it the first time, create/add the following folders under the ...\2.71 directory:

\autosave
\cache
\config
\temp

Then run blender and if it works then set the \temp folder in the preferences and save them. If you don't create those folders Blender will look into C:\Users[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.71. You may also delete everything inside this last folder but if you don't add the above reference folders as described Blender will eventually (surely the \config one) recreate them under that user directory (AppData etc.).

Just give the above a try, and I hope it helps.

First of all, please do not set priority yourself.

Also, try to run Blender from a console (command line), to see possible error messages, and please attach here the crash.txt log that should be generated (see messages in commandline).

To check it’s not a graphic driver issue, please try to put this dll next to blender.exe and see whether it still crashes.

This happened to me. When I use the FX 8320 processor. 2.7.1 Blender can not open. But blender version 2.7.0 runs fine.

Ok, so it sounds like a very early issue, if you can't even get the help message in console… :/ Not a wind dev, will add some as CC.

@weyahu can you please try one of the 'legacy' VS2008 build from our buildbot (as well as latest VC2013 ones)? Might be a VC2013 issue :/

The builds have been done with different compilers.

Do you have the VC Redistributable installed? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784 For the regular 2.71 build.

I tried @Harvester's and @mont29's suggestions.
Both did not work :(

I tried on these builds
blender-2.71-win64
blender-2.71-2ec0077-win64
blender-2.71-d9f3925-win64

I created the 4 folders in \2.71 directory in \Appdata...\Blender

I also removed the 2.70 folders and tried running the program.
My 2.70 build easily ran with default factory settings as it should.

I even pasted the .dll file that @mont29 provided alongside the blender.exe files.

Is there any other blender data in other locations that I can clear and start fresh?

Trupelo, I am not sure if I explained it correctly but those additional folders should be created within the unzipped installation folder under the directory \2.71 and not in your local user data directory (Appdata etc.). Here follow some screenshots as further examples:

T40976_Blender_Paths_1.jpg
Here you see the two paths I am refering to. If you simply unzip and run Blender for the first time then save both preferences and startup file, the \config directory is created automatically in you user data directory, as shown in the right panel.

T40976_Blender_Paths_2.jpg
To setup Blender in its own separate environment, close Blender, create the above referenced additional folders within the \2.71 directory under the Blender installation directory where you unzipped it, as you can see on the left panel in the above screenshot.

T40976_Blender_Paths_3.jpg
Now run Blender and in the Preferences change the Temp folder path to be the one you have just added as above described, and save the Preferences, then (if you wish) save also your startup file. These files are now inside the \config folder of you Blender installation.

You may now delete the folder \2.71 within your local application directory (Appdata etc.), if you wish, simply remember that if you don't setup the Blender installation directory structure as above Blender will automatically create those folders as needed within the local user application directory.

You may check if Blender is setup properly by clicking the item named "System Info" in the Help menu and opening it in the text editor of the Scripting Menu Layout as seen below:

T40976_Blender_Paths_4.jpg

This is what I usually do to keep the Blender environment isolated. I hope it helps and I apologize for the long reply.

@Harvester,
You are helping me and then you apologize! :)

I created the 4 folders inside the \2.71 directories of each of the 2.71 builds I have.
Blender still crashes on launch.

I have attached the system info file from my official 2.71 build.
hope it helps.

What if this is not a Blender issue at all but my system's?
Will re-installing my OS fix this issue?

@mont29, @ThomasDinges, @Harvester
Is there any other blender data on other locations in my C drive that I need to clear?

Yes, I apologized for the long reply ;-)

I can't see any attachment. Please retry to attach it. Is there any error or crash log file inside the \temp folder?

Other data are inside the Windows Registry but I don't think they should matter being usually links and file opening associations, anyway the developers may tell you more about this.

Reinstalling the OS should be the last resort without any Assurance that the problem will disappear but you won't know it until you will do it.

Unfortunately I cannot help you further, sorry.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your posts. I seem to be having the same Problem with this Blender application. I am testing Blender 2.71 (64bits) on a VMware. The installation was a success as it only required click/next on the wizard. Once the application finishes installing, I can launch it with no problem. If I exit out of the application, it closes and then I get an APPCRASH error message. However this doesn't happen on a physical machine. I did a little bit of searches here and there before stumbling on this forum. See Machine details below

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise
OS Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation
OS Configuration: Member Workstation
OS Build Type: Multiprocessor Free
System Manufacturer: VMware, Inc.
System Model: OptiPlex 990
System Type: x64-based PC
Processor(s): 1 Processor(s) Installed. [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7 Genuine Intel ~1584 Mhz
BIOS Version: Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00, 09/07/2012

Total Physical Memory: 4,096 MB
Available Physical Memory: 3,239 MB
Virtual Memory: Max Size: 8,189 MB
Virtual Memory: Available: 7,345 MB
Virtual Memory: In Use: 844 MB

Can I also mention that the post configuration suggested by Harvester has also been actioned, but it stall generates the error message in the virtual machine. However, the 32bits seems to work. Any ideas on how to rectify my issues pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee

Yes the MS visual Studio common runtime math functions might want to use FMA / AVX in some situations where this is impossible.
Service pack 1 helps here by improving things but even then depending on the processor flags and things like virtualization things can still crash. In 2.72 we avoid this code path in an effort to fix these issues. please retest with the testbuild.

@Juicy Fruit---Much appreciated.. The idea was to have this application (Blender) Sequenced, so it can sit in its own bubble. But by the look of things, that's not a possibility with this crash issue. I might have to settle with the 32bit for now.
