OS X 10.9 - Navigation File Tree Does Not Work #41192

System Information

(Fresh install of) OS X 10.9.4 "Mavericks"
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

Blender Version
Broken: 2.71
Worked: 2.69

Short description of error

When trying to either File -> Open... or File -> Import -> [any format] I am presented with a "File Hierarchy Screen". However clicking on the folders (or folder name) I cannot navigate into them! I tried also double-clicking, or navigating with the arrow keys and Space etc., but to no avail. Also changing the representation mode of the files (List, Icons, ...) did not seem to work.

Note that when the mouse hovers over the folder icons they are hightlighted with a light-grey background! It just seems that the mouse-click on them is not registered (or processed).

I just down-graded to 2.69, and there it (still) works as expected.

Also note that navigating via the "System Bookmarks" on the left does work! Just not in the presented file hierarchy itself.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Launch Blender 2.71
  • CMD + O ("Open File")
  • In my case /Users/MyUserName (home folder) is presented
  • BUG: Try to navigate into one of your folders (e.g. "Pictures", "Documents" or whatever) - DOES NOT WORK

Repeat the above with Blender 2.69 (haven't tried 2.70): it works.

Workaround: Manually entering the selected path in the file selection screen does work, e.g. I can manually enter /Users/MyUserName/Documents, and the Blender file selection screen navigates into that folder (no it is not a read-permission thingy). It's just that navigating with the mouse and (double-clicking) on folders (to navigate into them) or files (to select them) does not seem to work.

Oh and yes, in case that matters: the above AMD graphics card is from an iMac Mid 2011 with 8 GB RAM.

Very odd.
I'am on same system and cannot reproduce.
Also cannot imagine what could cause this effect atm..

Followup:
This would be such a prominent issue, i'am sure we would have gotten lot of complaints.
Pls. check your system if you have problems also outside Blender.

Try set Blender back to factory settings and test again ...

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, a very curious problem and if it was a common one I'd expect much more feedback about this - I mean, it wouldn't hard to spot!

Anyway, as I wrote this is a clean install of OS X 10.9 (with lots of other applications installed in the meantime, off course). Specifically I am pretty sure that no previous Blender configuration was "lying around" (I did migrate all my data manually, so I was very selective of what I migrated from e.g. ~/Library/Application Support).

So I am very confident that this was a very clean install of Blender 2.71: I downloaded the 64bit (in case that matters!) stock binary from http://www.blender.org/download/ (german mirror) and simply dragged it into the /Applications folder.

Then the first thing I tried was importing an OBJ model. As this did not work I tried to open existing scenes. In both cases I was not able to "click a folder (or file) to navigate into (or to select the path)".

I then downloaded the 2.69 version (which I had in use under OS X 10.8.5 and I knew that it would still work), dragged it again into the /Applications folder (overwriting the previous installation), and it worked: (single-) clicking on a folder navigates into that sub-directory, as expected.

To make sure I then re-installed 2.71, and again, file system navigation did not work! Re-installing 2.69, and bingo! Works again. So this is "reliably reproducible" on my system.

By the way, it could be related: I do have a **"SpaceExplorer USB" connected to the system **(with the latest driver from 3DConnexion). The SpaceExplorer USB is detected just fine in Blender (I did not have to do a single setup step). I can't imagine how such a device could interfere with normal mouse processing (in a file dialog/screen), but you never know...

Are there any config or log files that could be of any help or that you want me to double-check or modify?

To be specific: that is the version that I was trying to get working: blender-2.71-OSX_10.6-j2k-fix-x86_64.zip

It works now! You can close this issue.

Honestly, I swear it wasn't working yesterday! ;) But I just re-installed 2.71 and I can now select directories/files as expected - with "SpaceExplorer USB" attached (which also works as expected).

It might be possible that the 2.69 installation left some configuration which now also makes the 2.71 work. But what speaks against that is that I tried that yesterday as well, and it wasn't working back there either.

To make sure I deleted ~/Library/Application Support/Blender directory completely and re-launched 2.71 (but I just noticed that this directory only contains "recent files" and "bookmark" text files anyway) - still works.

The only reasonable explanation that I have is that "a reboot might have solved the problem" (as it usually does cough cough), maybe in the combination with the installation of the latest 3Dconnexion driver (which forced me to do a reboot anyway, but maybe a second reboot was still necessary) - otherwise I am at a loss of words, but yeah, let's blame the 3Dconnexion driver for now (which fixed itself now).

Sorry for the noise. And thanks for that great product for a hobby 3D enthusiast (and developer myself ;))

It is possible that somehow the finder favorites where not collected fully on the first start
of Blender. Sometimes certain features must be touched first time to take effect, aka
a fresh sys has not all prefs set, if never used before.

Anyway...'nough of speculation :)

Good it worked out for you itself.
