Blender 2.71
38cd35c
64 bit build, Windows 7 64 bitSelect the default cube and press CTRL+G to make a group and save the file.
Restart blender and select 'Link' - 'Group' - 'Group' (the Group just created) from that file.
Then select 'Append' - 'Object' - 'Cube'.
The cube appears now as linked object instead as appended object.
And a question yet to make a linked group local seems not yet implemended. Right?

Note, you can select the object and make it local. (Object -> Make Local), and you can make the group local from the outliner.
Campbell, what is described in #36297 or better in the blender artist thread is not the problem I've tried to explain here.
After linking to a group which contains an object 'xyz' and then trying to append this object 'xyz' it is linked instead. This is imho not correct and maybe confusing at least for new users.
@heik the issue here is that appending data thats already linked is problematic because existing linked data may reference it.
In simple cases this could be supported using some rule like: "If you directly append an object and its already linked, then make it local".
But this gets complicated since appending isn't just adding direct links, it links obdata and materials too, should it expand those or not (its an option you get when making local).
And then you have to deal with linked data which isn't appended but may share materials for eg, with the object being appended.
Even though #36297, reads a bit different. its basically the same issue (the fact that user deletes and re-appends isn't significant)
