Dupliverts eats performance #41797

Short description of error
Using dupliverts with many intances, but simple geometry slows down Blender massively. But only in certain cases, sometimes only after saving and reopening. Then basic actions in Blender take half a minute or more. In this case I have 200200 instances of a standard cube with 6 faces/8vertices (400006=240000 faces in all). Deactivating and reactivating dupliverts sometimes fixes this.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Add a mesh --> grid, with 200 x 200 subdivisions. Scale it up 200 times.
  • Add a mesh cube
  • Parent Cube to grid
  • Select grid, activate Duplication --> Verts under Object settings.
  • After this point save the file. Sometimes it locks up Blender immediately, sometimes only after reopening the file. Then things like rotating the viewport, using the view schortcuts on the Numpad (like 7, 1, 3), turning on Shaded view, adding a material, etc. lock up Blender for about 30 seconds each. Using a higher grid resolution locks it up even longer.
  • Deactivating and then reactivating Dupliverts sometimes fixes this. The problem reappears after saving and reopening.

Cannot reproduce that here (linux64, GTX850m).

This is likely an issue with GPU driver, did you try changing OGL settings in User Preferences, System tab? Especially try enabling/disabling VBO setting…
