mesh unwrapped although not selected #42329

System Information
Win 7 64 bit and GTX 770

Blender Version
Broken: 2.72 64 bit 3138d39

I have a scene with an object with many faces and I intended to unwrap only a view of them. But all faces are selected after unwrapping. I have attached a file which containes a part of this object.

Open the attached file go in edit mode and without selecting any faces press 'U' and then 'Project from view' or 'Cube Projection' for example. As result all is selected and unwrapped. But normally nothing should happen without faces selected previously.

This happens because there is no UV map existing prior to running the operator. This causes the operator to first create a default UV map, which in turn selects all the elements of the mesh ...

You can simply add an empty UV map in the mesh properties before running the unwrap operator, which will keep all the unselected faces' uvs at their default (0,0).

I don't think there is a way to avoid this operator behavior in general, since we can't properly restore selection after the automatic UV map creation and it may not even be desirable in all cases.

Ok, that helps to solve the issue. But the default cube does not have an empty uv map but if I unwrap the cube (without any face selected) an empty uv map is being created but without selecting the complete mesh. Why it is here different?
