i5 4670K 3.4GHz (1150 chipset)
Asus Z87-PLUS motherboard
8GB RAM 1600MHz
Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Haswell)

Short description of error
Blender "stops working" when I try to open the application for the first time after my first install.
I have searched online and I have subsequently downloaded a microsoft visual c++ 2008 redistributable package.
I already have Python 3.3 installed but the DOS window just said it had found bundled 2.72 python files.
I've unistalled and re-installed in case files were corrupted but had no luck resolving the issue.
Not sure what is wrong

@MartijnBerger maybe you know if we require a newer version of C++ redist here?
Might also be caused by old drivers for your graphics card, you could try updating those.
I already have Python 3.3 installed but the DOS window just said it had found bundled 2.72 python files.
can you check your PYTHONPATH PYTHONHOME or any other python related varibales.
you can open a cmd window and do "set PYTHONPATH" to view then "set PYTHONPATH=" to clear
Then try restarting blender.
I tried doing that and it didn't work.
Just out of curiosity I tried to install the 32-bit version and it has installed and opens perfectly. Despite this, I don't see why the 64 bit version failed to work as I know for sure my system OS and CPU are 64 bit

Have you try the zip version of 64 bit blender? Does it worked?

You should not use the Visual Studio 2008 redistributable, but the 2013 one. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784
Also make sure you have all Windows updates (including SP1) installed.

You might also try using opengl32,dll from ftp://ftp.blender.org/sergey/softwaregl/ by putting it next to blender.exe in order to see if it helps.
This will switch blender to a fully software opengl mode, eliminating possible bugs in video driver.
The issue reported can't be reproduced so far, and has been moved to the BF Blender: Unconfirmed project.
If 2 other people aren't able to redo the bug after 2 weeks, it will be closed.
We appreciate the effort that goes into making bug reports, but to be able to fix bugs we have to be able to redo them.
If there is anything you can provide to help others to reproduce the problem, be sure to include it.

Your specs

Solution : try updating to service pack 1 because mine solve the problem by updating
