Panagiotis Issaris (takis) raised the priority of this task from to Needs Triage.

Ah, I just noticed that there's a problem with my NVIDIA driver. I had only checked using glxinfo, and noticed NVIDIA instead of Mesa, so I figured the driver was working fine. But, glxgears now shows me only 60fps for a tiny window, so there's something wrong.

Updated driver to:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-346.35.run

This now gives no results, while before the update there was one reference to Mesa...
glxinfo |grep -i mesa

And now it does work as expected:

takis@zotac:~/Downloads/blender-2.73a-linux-glibc211-x86_64$ ./blender
connect failed: No such file or directory
AL lib: (EE) UpdateDeviceParams: Failed to set 44100hz, got 48000hz instead

Yeah, crashes on startup often appear with unsupported graphics drivers. This one should be the latest for your card.

Ah, we commented almost simultaneously :S

Glad it's working again then :)
