System Information
Opensuse 13.2/64
Intel i5 3770K
GTX 760 4 GB
Driver 349.12

Blender Version
Broken:2.74, 2.73a
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
User Preferences Compress does not work, it does nothing.
Compress setting in "Save as" is working.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Issue is with every file, open, save, look at file size.
Use Compress setting in "Save as", compare file size.

BTW. Why .blend1, .blend2 is not compressed too?

As Gaia reported in IRQ it work in Windows so may Linux or OSX issue only.

Investigated this and we do use the library properly, but requested compression is too low (level 1). Increasing to level 9 or so shows some more compression, but this may be library dependent since we use different libraries in WIndows.

@ideasman42 wrote this, so leaving the decision to him

checking the output size isn't a reliable way to see if compression is enabled.

This option works, checked changing user preferences and saving a file, as well as enabling compression in the file selector.

To confirm this works run:

  file untitled.blend

Expected output.

untitled.blend: gzip compressed data, max speed, from Unix

We're using max speed because saving 200mb+ files can lock up Blender while saving, making it impractical.

If you really need maximum compressed blend files - you can use gzip directly. (then remove the .gz extension).

Hi, I am sorry to bother you again, I get an output from file command:

Compress set in User Preferences > File:
file brecht_patch.blend
brecht_patch.blend: Blender3D, saved as 64-bits little endian with version 2.73 (saved with 2.74 btw.)

Compress set in File selector:
file brecht_patch_save_as_with_compress.blend
brecht_patch_save_as_with_compress.blend: gzip compressed data, max speed, from Unix

Max speed is OK but it seams UP setting is not working.
Or I missunderstud the meaning of the User Pref setting.

Thanks for looking in to, mib

After you save the first file, the user preference is not taken into account, only the operator preference.

Generally, what you see in the compress field when you use save as is what you get. The option takes the preference into account as well.
