System Information
Windows XP/SP3 32bits

Blender Version
Broken: version 2.74 (sub 5), branch b'master', commit date b'2015-05-27' b'23:07', hash b'46d8bcb', b'Release'
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Indication of Particles is different when I change 'Emit From'.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
A state when I set Particles system.
But I set a value same as Start Frame in End Frame to display Particles.
Png1.png
I set Faces again after I changed 'Emit From' elsewhere.
Png2.png
Indication of Particles is different from the last time.

However, the indication does not change when I set Normal of 'Emitter Geometry' to 0 and perform the same thing.
A change for 1 frame of Normal seems to be added.

This phenomenon is unrelated to end frame being the same as start frame.
It only sets it to merely increase displayed particle.

When start/end frame is different.

A state when I set Particles system.

When blender reads blend file, a change for 1 frame of Normal is added.
This is a secondary bug, too.

This is the contents which I reported in #43818 .
Because plural malfunction was included in that report, I mediated a report.

First of all, steps of reproducing the issue are not totally clear to me. Please attach simple .blend and instructions about what exact to change in what order, what you expect to see after those steps and what you get instead.

P.S. Old particles are quite fragile and needs major redesign. Unless this is a regression it's likely belongs to a TODO list. But that i'll let @LukasTonne to decide.

I should have already shown the reason that could not attach blend file.
This is because results are different when blender read blend file.

Then I attach the file of the sample.
sample.blend
I show a procedure to confirm.

Open the attached file.
sample1.png
Add particles system to Cube.
sample2.png
You should be able to confirm that there is particle in the place that I surrounded.
Change 'Emit From' to the Volume.
sample3.png
Change 'Emit From' to Faces.
sample4.png
There is particle in the places different first.
When Normal of Emitter Geometry is 0, this does not occur.

I think that the position where it was displayed first is right.
When I save it in a file and read it, it is set at the wrong position.

There are some bugs in current particle system.
Because they are related to this problem, at first I explain those problems.
blend file

Open an attached file.
PS1.png
Some setting is changed in particle system set in this Cube.

  • Number/End Frame of the Emission section.

  • Emitter Object(X) of the Velocity section.

  • 'How particles are rendered' of the Render section.
When 'Emit From' is changed right after you opened the file, the indication changes in a chosen form.
Choose 'Emit From' in order shown below.
    order : Faces > Verts > Volume
    PS2.png
    Push short cut (SHIFT+CTRL+DOWN ARROW).
    PS3.png
When you move a frame first, particles is not displayed now based on chosen 'Emit From'.
particles is displayed based on it which was chosen right before 'Emit From' is chosen.
It seemed to set Verts in 'Emit From'.
When you choose 'Emit From' by the following confirmation work to evade this bug, choose the same thing twice.

I explain this report below.
Open an attached file.
PS1.png
Choose Verts of 'Emit From' twice.
PS4.png
Cone which turned a little is displayed.
Push short cut (SHIFT+CTRL+DOWN ARROW).
PS5.png
This is the right indication of the first frame.
If you choose Verts of 'Emit From' twice again, it is displayed as before.
I think that a position of particle slipped off because the value of the Velocity section was considered to be the first frame.
I do not understand the reason why Cone turns.
The position where Cone is displayed when you chose Verts of 'Emit From' twice is the same as a position of Cone when you moved it to the next frame after you return frame first.
PS6.png
I commented that this problem occurs when blender loaded blend file before, but correct it because it was my mistake.

Thanks for the report, but will archive that for now. As Sergey said, particles are currently considered more or less unfixable…
