Please always attach system information as a text file, not as a text in the bug report itself. That will make report easier to read and follow.

Also, does the issue issue happen with previous 2.74 release?

Hi,
I mistakenly typed my old 32 bit version that worked as v2.63, it was in fact v2.73a (blender-2.73a-windows32.exe in my downloads folder).

I added the top of the dxdiag in the post to try to save you time however i attached the .txt file for completeness, appologies if this was wrong.

I believe my video drivers are fully up-to-date as they are on auto-update via the Catalyst s/w.

I haven't tried v2.74 because v2.75 is said to be a final, stable release, if i wanted an old one i would have stuck to the 32 bit version that i already had installed.
I have now installed the 32 bit version of v2.75 which works fine except a cannot use my gfx card for render as it seems to crash but that's a different problem.

Thanks for your time.

The purpose of testing previous release it to isolate if there's some rather recent changes caused the issue or it's something much older. So things to do/try:

  • Make sure you're using latest-latest service pack with all the updates available on vista. It had some known issues with FMA instruction set detection which is impossible to fix from blender side.
  • Try using previous 2.74 release and see if it also lcrashes
  • Try using 2.75 32bit to see if it's something bitness or CPU optimization dependent
  • Run blender from the console and see if it prints any meaningful information in there

Yea, when i originally d/loaded v2.73 i obtained the 64 bit version but it wouldn't run which is how i ended up using the 32 bit version.
Same now with v2.75, 64 bit wouldn't work so i'm using the 32 bit version with seemingly no problems.

As far as windows updates i am fully up-to-date and continue to do so, Drivers are sometimes a problem as i have discovered the sound drivers that load from windows update cause problems so i always ensure i have specific ones.

I assume you mean open a dos window and run blender.exe from it ? As i've uninstalled v2.75 64 bit i can no longer do that.

Original reason for this post was to give as much info as i could (hence the dxdiag and video) because having specifically installed a 64 bit operating system it's disappointing not to be able to run a program that should run in 64 bit.
I fully understand that it might be an incompatability on my specific system, thought it might be helpful for the diagnosis of the problem.
As 32 bit works i guess i'm forced to use that. I did wonder if it might be as simple as my two gpu's but i guess you'd have spotted that if it were the cause.

@MozoTyce, we can't fix issues which we can't reproduce, so just dumping information here does help fixing the issue so much. It'll help much more if you collaborate in solving the issue, since you've got access to a configuration which has issues with blender. So basically without you providing additional information we can't do much here.

Hi, thanks for all the replies.
As mentioned earlier, i have installed the 32 bit version for the time being as i really need to learn how to use the program.

Is there any way i can keep the 32 bit version for use and install the 64 bit version without the two interfering ? I'd happily try and help with the diagnosis if that's possible.

Please offer me some direction and i'll happily provide any and all info you need - thanks

@MozoTyce yes, you can use many Blender's on your system at once. Just download the ZIP, extract it, and run it (no installation required).

As Sergey says, we need to know if this is something that broke recently, or if it was ever working, if it broke, check release... etc.

please try going back versions of blender eg 2.74 to see when excellently compatibility broke. you can get old blender versions from http://download.blender.org/release/

Seems like an OpenGL issue.. One thing to try is to download opengl32.dll from ftp://ftp.blender.org/sergey/softwaregl/ and put it next to blender.exe. This will switch blender to fully software OpenGL mode which is slower but free of drivers glicthes.

If Blender will work with this library then it'll mean issue is in the driver and we're not really able to sovle it.

Tried downloading opengl32.dll from ftp://ftp.blender.org/sergey/softwaregl/ which i placed in the same folder as blender.exe and got the same visual fault.

Just ran the video i posted above and paused it at the dos window i see:
//Read new prefs: C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.75\config\userpref.blend
AL lib: UpdateDeviceParams: Failed to set 44100hz, got 48000hz instead//

Not sure if that's important ? The userpref.blend file must be an old one (from my 32 bit install ?) as i have not installed the 64 bit version only unpacked to it's own folder ?

Going to now delete that test folder and try other versions but please remember i have already tried v2.73 64 bit which gave me the same visual problem !

Deleted 2.75 64bit temp folder
Downloaded 2.74

Ran both normal and as admin same results
Copied opengl32.dll to folder
Ran both normal and as admin same results

Skipped 2.73 as that's the first i tried to get this whole thing started and i know it didn't work

Deleted 2.74 64bit temp folder
Downloaded 2.72

Ran both normal and admin dos window runs, window opens to full screen and a "Blender has stopped working" message.
Copied opengl32.dll to folder
Ran both normal and admin dos window runs, window opens to full screen and a "Blender has stopped working" message.

Skipped 2.71 and the 'a' versions, will work back up if i find one that works.
Deleted 2.72 64bit temp folder
Downloaded 2.70

Ran as normal appears to work, loaded correctly. No opengl32.dll needed.

blender-2.70-windows64_zip.jpg

Deleted 2.70 64bit temp folder
Downloaded 2.71

Ran both normal and admin dos window runs, window DOES NOT open to full screen but get a "Blender has stopped working" message.
Copied opengl32.dll to folder
Ran both normal and admin dos window runs, window DOES NOT open to full screen but get a "Blender has stopped working" message.

So it would seem there is something significantly different between v2.70 and v2.71 however v2.72 improved it a little as a full screen window does open but it still bombs out.
V2.70 appears to load and run but i did not run a thorough test on it.

Does that help ?

It appears to be a open gl related issue therefor there is nothing that can be done from blenders side you could try updating you gpu drivers however there is a chance that they dont make drivers for vista any more meaning it would be wise to upgrade your computer

I thought i'd circumnavigated the possibility of it being open gl related by following @Sergey advise regards the opengl32.dll file ?

So you're suggesting that you are no longer witing Blender to be compatible with Win Vista 64 or that Vista even using your open gl driver to bypass the system specific drivers is not compatible.

Therefore i can only assume that there is no current working 64 bit version of Blender for Win Vista 64 ? Not sure whether you could have known that already, am i the first to report a problem on Vista 64 or just the first to provide detailed reports and information ?

@Blendify, please let developers to decide whether the issue is fixable or not.

@MozoTyce, it's not clear to me, does 2.71 work or not for you?

@MartijnBerger, guess it's the FMA instruction set which causes issue. What was the way of making sure windows is working correct with it?

Something changed between v2.70, v2.71 & v2.72 (all 64 bit)

v2.70 runs fine
v2.71 immediately opens the dos window box (but not a full screen windows window) then gives the "Blender has stopped working" message.
v2.72 immediately opens a dos window box, then a windows full screen window, then gives the "Blender has stopped working" message. This situation continues the same with all further releases.

Okay. I have tested 2.75a before uploading on a vista x64 inside a kvm virtual machine and it does work for me there.
I needs to be fully upgraded else it will not work.

check the 32 bit build of 2.75a also to see if that does work.

Downloaded blender-2.75a-windows64.zip and installed to a temp folder

Identical results to v2.75 as mentioned above, again i tried adding the opengl32.dll next to blender.exe and it made no difference.

My Vista is fully up to date and i double checked my video drivers which are also up to date.

The 32 bit version of v2.75 is the one i'm currently using without problems (so far).

@Sergey the FX-8350 support FMA3 and FMA4 so it should not suffer from that.

Not sure what else to be discussed here.. All the possible causes of the issue are't the case here and we can't reproduce the issue here and hence can't do anything about this.

I only have access to one Vista x64 machine. And both buildbot and latest release work fine there.

I think we are suffering from:

https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/987093/x64-log-function-uses-vpsrlq-avx-instruction-without-regard-to-operating-system-so-it-crashes-on-vista-x64

If that is the case there is not much I can do except encourage you to move to Windows 7 SP1 or better. Or use a 32 bit release

I think that latest driver of AMD-Radeon-HD-7700-Series for Win Vista is Catalyst 13.12.
Do you use it?
Possibly it might be my misunderstanding, but asked you.

@MartijnBerger that is waaay above my head, i guess you could be right if so there is little hope of progress on Vista 64

@sindra1961 indeed i am using Driver Packaging Version: 13.251-131206a-165822C-ATI as seen below

HD7770-Drivers.jpg

Short of any new ideas i'm thinking we need to mark this thread as unsolvable and blame the FMA3 thingy on Microsoft ?

Thing is that your CPU is to new for vista. And your CPU does support FMA and AVX .. but vista does not.
Microsoft screwed up the detection and did not add full proper support to the OS and they likely never will.

MSVCRT tries to be fancy and uses these unsupported features. Crashing the application.

I see no other way out then to declare Vista x64 with these CPU's unsupported for now. There are not enough users to justify the expense of working around this. And that number of users will only drop.

Seems like this is not fixable from our side, so closing this. @MozoTyce, it might indeed be worth to report this to Microsoft.

Anyway thanks for the report, too bad we can't help you :/
