to follow up, after installing a new driver the problem no longer exists.
I now have compute device None or Open CL (Redwood)
Open subdivision compute type reads None with no options available.
I would presume this is the right for my system, if so this could be closed.

hi, I'm having the same issue with a different win 64 system.
System Information:
Operating system and graphics card
Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5450 @ 3 GHz 3.00 GHz ( 2 processors )
10 gig ram
Graphics Chipset ASUS HD7850 Series
New System Info text: system-info.txt
Blender Version
Broken: Blender-2.76.0-git.1cdf82d-AMD64
Short description of error
Instant Crash/Shut Down Blender/ Crash Video Drivers.
*note: the last time this happened on the old system I updated all video drivers & it made mmb scroll in graph, dope, nla & node editors slow to the point of near un-usable. this time I an not sure to update drivers in case of same problem occurring. I need the mmb button working in all editor types more than open sub'd.
at very least a sanity check for cpu/gpu menu items is needed. If it's not there, I won't try it.
Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Resolved'
closing as resolved.
updating to latest official drivers from AMD official site: http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/7000/7800#
this solved the problem for me & no subsequent performance issues arose.
apology's for noise on irc.
