Please always follow bug report guidelines and provide all the requested information in there.
From your current report it seems you simply don't have
Emulate 3 Button Mouse
enabled inUser Preferences -> Input
.Make sure it is enabled and if not, make a more comprehensive report which would allow us to reproduce the issue locally and hopefully fix it.
You are correct. Thank you. I couldn't find that anywhere, in any documentation. But everything is written with the assumption that the "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" option is pre-selected.

Closing since this isn't a software bug,
Can you provide links to out-of-date documentation so it can be corrected?
I only found one place where this was referenced - now corrected. rBM1012
I would say that references to [ALT]+[LMB] are fine. It is just the fact that there is no mention of enabling this alternative setting in the current documentation:
https://www.blender.org/manual/preferences/input.html#mouse
...A note about it could be, appropriately, placed there.
For example:
"Blender can be configured to work properly with single or two-button pointing devices if you open File ‣ User Preferences ‣ Input and check the box labeled: 'Emulate 3 Button Mouse'. The functionality of the 3 mouse buttons will then be be emulated with key/mousebutton combos as shown in the table below."
Thank you.
P.S. It is also worth mentioning (while someone is there) that the Apple Mouse / MMB table cel seems to incorrectly reference the Command key (Cmd) instead of the Option key (Opt) in the table, at the link above.
@ChristopherWheeler, having every place the MMB is used reference MMB-emulation seems excessive, same with numpad emulation.
(Unless its especially relevant to the text).
Showing the full path to the user preferences for each item is also a bit strange, though this could be done once at the top of the page.
Corrected apple-key table: rBM1014.
I meant replacing the text at:
https://www.blender.org/manual/preferences/input.html#mouse
With this:
"Blender can be configured to work properly with single or two-button pointing devices if you open File ‣ User Preferences ‣ Input and check the box labeled: 'Emulate 3 Button Mouse'. The functionality of the 3 mouse buttons will then be be emulated with key/mousebutton combos as shown in the table below."
Or this:
"Blender can be configured to work properly with a single or two-button pointing device if you select the 'Emulate 3 Button Mouse' option under Input in User Preferences. The functionality of the 3 mouse buttons will then be be emulated with key/mousebutton combos as shown in the table below."
Instead of this:
"Blender can be configured to work with different mouse types (such as a two-button mouse, Apple single-button Mouse, or laptop touchpad). The functionality of the 3 mouse buttons will then be be emulated with key/mousebutton combos as shown in the table below."
And I agree that references to MMB should stay just MMB (us touchpad users can figure rest out).
Made some minor edits, rBM1015. though its redundant to reference user prefs input section, since thats the context of the page.
Changed status from 'Archived' to: 'Resolved'
I finallysee what you mean about the redundancy. And the new text reads nicely.
Thank you both!
It's good to see Blender development carrying on so vibrantly.
